Sunday 22 August 1926

Ethel gave P A at Old Kirkby Prims.

Notes

Ethel Cirket

Ethel refers to my grandmother Ethel Cirket. Grandma and grandad were “courting” at this time and would marry in 1930, see Chapter 16.

Primary Anniversary

I think PA refers to primary anniversary, that is the Sunday School Anniversary for younger children in the Primary Department. Initially, I had some doubts about this as I am not sure you would “give” such an anniversary. However, three years later, grandad referred to grandma giving the primary anniversary at Kirkby Park.

My grandfather’s diary entries for 26 August to 1 September 1929. The entry for 2 September reads “Ethel gave Primary An at Kirkby Park“.

Old Kirkby Prims

I believe this refers to Old Kirkby Primitive Methodist Chapel. However, I have struggled to identify exactly where this was. Presumably, grandad was distinguishing between the old part of Kirkby in Ashfield, also known as Kirkby Cross, and the part of Kirkby where he lived, known then as Eat Kirkby. He did use these terms in his diary to distinguish Whit Walks that took place in different parts of the town.

The Hill Methodist Church is located in that part of Kirkby but, at that time, this was a Wesleyan church and I am certain grandad would not have confused the two! Now, I think it is most likely that he was referring to Kirkby Park Primitive Methodist Chapel. This was a tin chapel on Vernon Road. It operated from 1905 until it merged with the Hill Methodist Church in 1975.
