Names of People Killed in the World Wars

During the course of researching the diaries, I have come across a number of people killed during the world wars including family members and family friends. This is a list of those people.

BLACKBURN Joseph – Chapter 9

The subject of a book entitles “Joseph, 1917”. He was exempted from military service by a local Tribunal on the basis that he was a market gardener but the decision was overturned by the Central Tribunal who considered him a hawker of fruit and vegetables. The local Tribunal went on strike but Joseph was sent to the front and he was killed in action in 1918.

BLOW Alfred William – Chapter 9

Edith SEARSON’S brother. He was killed in the first world war on 31 July 1917 aged just 21.

BONSER Geoffrey Alwyn Gershom – Kirkby Tribunal blog

Son of GG BONSER. He was killed in action in WW1 in September 1918. He had been a Captain in the Royal Army Medical Corps. He died when he was hit by a shell while attending the wounded near ARMENTIÈRES in FRANCE.

BOWLER Arthur Charles – Chapter 9

Son of Christopher Ernest BOWLER. He was born in 1897 in Bedfordshire. There is an Arthur C BOWLER recorded on the ELSTOW Bunyan Meeting House and I think this is him. He was in the Bedfordshire Regiment and he was killed on 17 November 1916 aged 20. He is buried in CONTAY BRITISH CEMETERY in FRANCE.

CHARLES Joseph – Chapter 8

Listed on the BOURNE/TRINITY war memorial. He was Christine EVANS‘ great uncle. He was born in 1886 in ANNESLEY to Elijah and Maria. He married Harriet VARNAM and they had one son, Joseph Clement (Clem). He was killed at the battle of Bellewaarde in Belgium on 16 June 1915.

CUPIT Harold L – Kirkby Tribunal blog

Harold Cupitt first appeared before the Kirkby Tribunal in May 1916. His appeal was handled by his employer, The Co-operative Society. He was granted an exemption of one month. His case was considered again by the Tribunal in July 1916. On this occasion, his name was spelled CUPIT. His case came back to the Tribunal in February 1917. His case was adjourned pending medical examination. I have not found any record of him returning to the Tribunal. His name appears on the Kirkby War Memorial. He was posted to the 2/8th Battalion Sherwood Foresters on 27 July 1917. On 26 September 1917, he was killed in action during the attack at St Julian, Belgium. He is buried at Tyne Cot Cemetery in Belgium.

DRABBLE William Ernest – Chapter 8

DREW S Rankin – Index of films seen

Star of “The Tattoo Mark” which grandad saw in 1914. He was a US actor and film director who was born in 1891 and who died in 1918. He was part of the DREW-Barrymore acting family. Although he was only 27 when he died, he had appeared in 36 films and directed 11. He was killed in action when his plane was shot down over FRANCE.

FORD Arthur James Cirket – Chapter 9

Grandma’s cousin. He was born in 1893. He was killed in action on 5 March 1916 and is buried at LAPUGNOY MILITARY CEMETERY in FRANCE. He is also remembered on a war memorial at Elstow Bunyan Meeting House. He was a corporal in the 5th Battalion, Northamptonshire regiment and he died of his wounds. Before the war, he taught as an elementary school teacher. In the Harper Trust Boys School school record for Arthur James Cirket FORD, his guardian was given as Henry and living at 21 Stanley Street. He was in school from 21 May 1892 to 11 October 1907. In the comments box, it said monitor. On 4 July 1910, Arthur James Cirket FORD applied for a job at Kempston, Bedford Road Board/lower School (Boys)

Farmer’s son killed in the first world war according to Edith SEARSON.

HEIGHWAY Frederick Hayes – Chapter 8

HIBBERT W H – Kirkby Tribunal blog

W H HIBBERT was a grocer and licence holder. He was between 32 and 33 years old. He lived in Byron Street.  Between July 1916 and March 1917, he appeared before the Tribunal four times and was represented by the solicitor Mr JACKSON. In March 1917, the Tribunal gave him a final two months exemption.  His name is on Kirkby War Memorial. He was a private in the 2nd Bn South Staffordshire Regiment. He enlisted at MANSFIELD and was killed in action on 30 November 1917. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial in FRANCE.

HORABIN John Bernard – Kirkby Tribunal blog

J B HORABIN appealed to the Kirkby Tribunal for exemption from military service during WW1. His name is on Kirkby War Memorial. In his time in the military, he served with the 1/5th Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment. He was killed in action on 17 October 1918 and is commemorated on Vis-en-Artois Memorial, Pas de Calais, FRANCE.

LEE Arthur – Chapter 8

Listed on the BOURNE/TRINITY war memorial.

LOCKWOOD Albert – Chapter 9

Albert LOCKWOOD was one of a number of employees of EAST KIRKBY CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY who appeared before Kirkby Tribunal in July 1916. He was granted an exemption of two months. He appeared before the Tribunal again in March 1917. The Tribunal granted him a further exemption of one month. It seems he may have appealed as, in April 1917, he appeared before the Tribunal again. His appeal was dismissed. His name is listed on the Kirkby War Memorial. He joined the 5th Bn Alexandra Princess of Wales’s Own (Yorkshire Regiment). He went missing in action on 25 March 1918 and was later confirmed killed in action on that date. As he had no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial.

MEADS Cyril – Chapter 8

Listed on the BOURNE/TRINITY war memorial.

NEWCOMBE William Arthur – Chapters 8, 9

Listed on the BOURNE/TRINITY war memorial. He was Phil NEWCOMBE’S youngest brother and was born in 1888. He died on 9 October 1916 and was a Bombardier in the Royal Field Artillery and his service number was 82032. He is buried/remembered at ST SEVER CEMETERY, ROUEN B 16 61.

POLLARD Charles Edward – Chapter 8

Listed on the BOURNE/TRINITY war memorial.

PRESTON C – Chapter 8

“RICHARD” Chapter 9

Edith SEARSON’S cousin killed in the first world war.

“SAM” Chapter 9

SIDDY Ernest Edward – Kirkby Tribunal blog

Ernest E SIDDY first appeared before the Tribunal in August 1916. He was described as a 34 year-old bricklayer. The Tribunal granted him temporary exemption for six months. He came back before the Tribunal in June 1917. He was given a final exemption of three months. He is listed on Kirkby War Memorial. He served with the Inland Water Transport Royal Engineers. He was killed on 26 October 1917 while brick laying at an airfield in southern England. The pilot was practising take off and landing when on the sixth attempt his plane stalled and crashed. Ernest was hit by the plane and died of head injuries. The pilot survived. Ernest is buried in Kingsway Old Cemetery.

SIMPSON Arthur – Chapter 8

TEECE Leonard – Chapters 4, 8, 9

Friend of grandad’s. He was born in 1897 in Hucknall and was killed on 9 August 1915 in GALLIPOLI. He is commemorated on the HELLES MEMORIAL and on the BOURNE/TRINITY war memorial.

WEBSTER Isaac – Chapter 8

Listed on the BOURNE/TRINITY war memorial.

WILSON John William – Chapter 9

He was killed aboard HMS Broke at the BATTLE OF JUTLAND in 1916.

WOOD Robert Fred – Chapter 8

Listed on the BOURNE/TRINITY war memorial.

WOOSTER Victor Arthur – Chapter 9

Killed in the first world war and commemorated on the PORTSMOUTH naval memorial just above Joseph Edward WRIGHT.

WRIGHT Joseph Edward – Chapter 9

Brother of Doris Victoria WRIGHT. He was born in 1893 and worked as a coal miner (road repairer below ground). He joined the navy in 1912 and was killed aboard HMS Broke at the BATTLE OF JUTLAND in 1916. He is commemorated on the naval memorial in PORTSMOUTH.
