Mum – V Hot. Went to St P in am. Went to Walcott in aft. Nice with cool breeze. P went to Church at night. I didn’t.
Roger – This morning while everyone else went to church I stayed at home and did some work for my maths exam tomorrow. After lunch we went to Walcott. Mum sun-bathed all afternoon. I swam in the sea. This evening listened to the radio & watched a POW film. Tricia has gone on a river walk with SPOTSOC.
Notes
A Note on the Weather
Mum simply noted that it was very hot. This is not surprising as 1976, is well-known for having had a very hot and dry summer, see Chapter 129.
St Peter’s Park Lane Methodist Church
Mum went to the service at St Peter’s Park Lane Methodist Church (St P) in the morning (am), see Chapter 124. She noted that my older sister Tricia (P for Patricia) went at night but mum did not. She did not say why. I wondered if it related to who was taking the service but it seemed that Rev Ream took the morning service and Rev Elworthy the evening one.
Although mum does not state this explicitly, my diary entry implies that all my siblings went to morning service and that I stayed home on my own.
Walcott
Mum noted going to Walcott in the afternoon (aft). I am not sure if this was a church trip or not but it is likely as such trips were common on Sunday afternoons at this time, see Chapter 124. Mum noted that it was nice with a cool breeze.
In my diary, I noted that I went too. I noted that mum sun-bathed all afternoon and I swam in the sea.
Walcott is a village on the north Norfolk coast. It was our go to place for the beach when I was a child and teenager.

Revision
I was taking my O levels that year and had a maths exam the next day, see Chapter 118. I took advantage of being on my own at home that Sunday morning to do some maths revision.
Radio
I listened to the radio in the evening. While I do not specify this, it is likely that I listened to the chart show as this was my usual practice and is something I recall doing from that time, see Chapter 122. Indeed, at the time, I recorded the Top 20 in my diary with notes on previous chart position and which records had dropped out of the Top 20 that week. However, I did this on a Tuesday and am reminded that this was the day when the new chart was announced.
POW Film
I noted watching a prisoner of war (POW) film. From the day’s TV guide, this was the 1953 film “Stalag 17” starring William Holden, Don Taylor and Otto Preminger. I didn’t think I remembered it but, having watched a trailer, I do seem to recall it.
Spotsoc River Walk
Tricia refers to my older sister (Patricia). SPOTSOC is a reference to a young people’s group based at St Peter’s Park Lane Methodist Church. Its full title was St Peter’s Over-Twelve Society. They met after Sunday evening service and, on this occasion, went for a river walk, see Chapter 124.
