Mum – V Hot. Hair set in am. Went to work at 12.30. V busy. Went to choir practice at night. Saw NJ – waved on way home. Mum went to Mansfield.
Roger – The heatwave continues today. Out in the sun on Wimbledon’s Centre Court it was 106°F. I went to school for a maths lesson which is my last one before the exam on Monday. This afternoon watched Wimbledon on TV. Mum & P both went out everybody else stayed in.
Notes
A Note on the Weather
Mum simply noted that it was very hot. This is not surprising as 1976, is well-known for having had a very hot and dry summer, see Chapter 129. In my diary, I gave more detail commenting that the heatwave was continuing and that the temperature in the sun on Centre Court at Wimbledon had been 106°F (41.1°C).
Hair Set
Mum had her hair set in the morning (am).
Mum Worked for Mr Ashken and Mr Stephens
During this period, mum worked as part-time medical secretary for the private practice of two surgeons, Mr Ashken and Mr Stephens, see Chapter 121. This practice was based at 41 Newmarket Road. She worked all day on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and half day on Fridays. On this occasion, as it was Friday, she worked in the afternoon, going in at 12.30. She noted that it was very busy.
Choir
Mum was part of the choir at St Peter’s Park Lane Methodist Church, see Chapter 124. At night, she went to choir practice.
In my diary, I noted that mum and my older sister Tricia (P for Patricia) went out but the rest of us stayed in. I was the oldest at this point and I was 16. I did not note where they went. However, mum went to choir practice and it is likely that Tricia went there too.
NJ
NJ is probably a reference to Mr Jones, a medical representative, who lived near us at 187 College Road, see Chapter 124. He was involved in the Norwich Evangel choir. I don’t know any more about him although he is mentioned a couple of times in mum’s diary. She may have known him through work.
Grandma Went to Mansfield
Mom noted that grandma went to Mansfield although she did not say why she went or how she got there, see Chapter 122. I assume she was visiting friends or family who she knew there from when she had lived in Kirkby, possibly her friend Amy Wilson and/or her cousin, Jim Seville, and his wife Renie.
Maths Lesson
I was taking my O levels at this time and only had to go into school when I had exams as formal lessons had finished. However, some teachers organised revision lessons for us which we could choose to attend or not. On this occasion, I went to such a maths lesson, see Chapter 118. I noted that it was the final such lesson before my exam the next Monday.
Wimbledon on TV
In the afternoon, I noted watching Wimbledon on television, see Chapter 123. However, I did not note the matches I watched.
