Mum – Work all day. V Hot. R & P home all day. Went to Jill Stocks for coffee – for Christian Aid collectors. John & Heather called for me. Roy called briefly at 7 – 7.30.
Roger – Went in the city this morning to get Alan’s birthday present. I was going to get him an Airfix model skeleton but I couldn’t find one. I’ll look again on Saturday. I also bought Liz’s present for Alan. A front door key & 2 rulers. Went swimming this afternoon. Gone to bed early as I’m tired.

Notes
Mum Worked for Mr Ashken and Mr Stephens
During this period, mum worked as part-time medical secretary for the private practice of two surgeons, Mr Ashken and Mr Stephens, see Chapter 121. This practice was based at 41 Newmarket Road. She worked all day on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and half day on Fridays. On this occasion, as it was Wednesday, she worked all day.

Note on Weather
Mum noted that it was very hot. That year, 1976, is well-known for having had a very hot and dry summer, see Chapter 129.
External Exams
R refers to me (Roger) and P to my older sister Tricia (Patricia). We were both doing external exams, O levels in my case and A levels in Tricia’s, so we only had to go into school when we had exams, see Chapter 118. Presumably, we did not have any that day as mum noted that we were both home all day.
Coffee for Christian Aid Collectors
Through her involvement in St Peter’s Park Lane Methodist Church, mum collected money door-to-door during Christian Aid Week in May, see Chapter 124. I think she covered the same road, Portersfield Road, each year. Sometimes, Tricia and I helped. On this occasion, mum went to a coffee evening organised as a thank-you to those who had collected for Christian Aid. This year, it was at Jill Stock’s house whereas the previous year it had been at the Howards. Mum noted that John and Heather Ferguson picked her up.

Deleted Entry
There is a deleted entry which reads “Roy called briefly 7-7.30“. Roy refers to my father Royle Drew, see Chapter 114, He was in Norwich for a Norwich Union course. It seems that mum crossed this out as she had originally written this on the wrong date. She changed it to the previous day although she referred to dad there as R.
Alan’s Birthday Presents
Alan refers to my younger brother. His birthday was on 13 June and, on this occasion, he was turning 14, see Chapter 122. I wanted to get him a birthday present so I went into the city to try to buy an Airfix model of a skeleton but I could not get one. I noted that I would try again on Saturday but my diary does not record that I did so! Sadly, I did not note what I got him in the end!

Liz refers to my younger sister Elizabeth. I did buy a present for Alan from her. this consisted of a front door key and two rulers.
Swimming
I noted that I went swimming in the afternoon, see Chapter 122. As I was not at school, I assume I went to the pool at St Augustine’s.
Early Night
I noted feeling tired so I had an early night.
