Mum – Busy at work – nice. Went to E concert at Earlham School. Joint Colman & Avenues VG. (Choir & orchestra). Mum went with me. Put frill on E’s black skirt – it makes it look really nice. 1S.
Roger – We had a timed essay in English and due to German CSEs we were displaced from our room. This evening mum and Lizzy argued but then went out together to Liz’s school concert. In the EUFA cup final 2nd leg in Belgium Liverpool drew with F C Bruges 1-1 as the score was 3-2 to Liverpool at Anfield Liverpool win 4-3 on aggregate.

Notes
Mum Worked for Mr Ashken and Mr Stephens
During this period, mum worked as part-time medical secretary for the private practice of two surgeons, Mr Ashken and Mr Stephens, see Chapter 121. This practice was based at 41 Newmarket Road. She worked all day on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and half day on Fridays. On this occasion, as it was Wednesday, she worked all day. She noted that it had been busy at work and thought that this had been nice.

School Concert
E refers to my younger sister Liz (Elizabeth). Mum went to her school concert. At that time, Liz was attending Avenues School, see Chapter 118. Mum noted that it was a joint concert by Colman Road and Avenues Schools. It was hosted at Earlham School, the secondary school Liz later attended. Mum noted that it involved a choir and an orchestra and that it was very good (VG). Grandma went with mum.
Frill on Black Skirt
Mum put a frill on Liz’s (E’s) black skirt, see Chapter 126. Mum thought that it made this look really nice.
Senokot
Mum took one Senokot (S) presumably for constipation, see Chapter 116. Senokot is a senna-containing medicine for the treatment of constipation.
School
I noted that. at school, see Chapter 118, we had a timed essay in English, presumably as part of our exam preparation. I also noted that we were displaced from our normal room as German CSEs were taking place there.
Mum and Liz Argued
In the evening, I noted that mum and Liz argued. Liz/Lizzy refers to my younger sister. As far as I can recall, I have always called her Liz (for Elizabeth) and have no recollection of calling her Lizzy but clearly I used both at this time. Interestingly, mum makes no mention of this argument in her diary and I don’t know what it was about. I did note that later they went out together to Liz’s school concert.
UEFA Cup Final
I noted that the second leg of the UEFA Cup Final was played that night between Liverpool and F C Bruges, see Chapter 123. I did not note if I watched the match or not. As far as I can see, the game was not shown live but highlights were shown on BBC1’s “Sportsnight” at 9.25 pm along with highlights of the Olympic Yachting Trials and a nostalgic piece about Britain at the Olympics.
For some reason, I spelled UEFA as EUFA! The UEFA Cup was introduced in 1971 to replace the Inter-City Fairs Cup. It became the UEFA Europa League in 2009. British teams have won the competition ten times including Chelsea (twice), Ipswich Town, Liverpool (three times), Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur (three times). The final was held over two legs until 1998.
First Leg
The first leg had been at Anfield on 28 April 1976. Liverpool won that 3-2. I had not mentioned it in my diary. It seems that not even highlights were shown on TV as BBC 1’s “Sportsnight” featured a preview of the FA Cup Final, boxing and ice hockey.

Second Leg
The second leg was a 1-1 draw so Liverpool won 4-3 on aggregate. Bruges took the lead from a penalty and, at that stage, would have won on away goals. But, Kevin Keegan scored when the ball was passed to him from an indirect free kick on the edge of the penalty area.

Second Victory
It was the second time Liverpool had won the UEFA Cup. They had previously won it in 1972-73, the second time the UEFA Cup was staged.
