Notes

Mum Worked for Mr Ashken and Mr Stephens

During this period, mum worked as part-time medical secretary for the private practice of two surgeons, Mr Ashken and Mr Stephens, see Chapter 121. This practice was based at 41 Newmarket Road. She worked all day on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and half day on Fridays. On this occasion, as it was Tuesday, she worked all day. She noted that Mr Ashken (Mr A) was back and she had a nice day, particularly in the afternoon.

Cold

Mum noted that she had a cold. She felt depressed about it as she wondered why she had got so many colds that winter. This is perhaps a slightly odd comment as May is hardly winter! She took a Lemsip and two Anadin at night which was her pretty standard cold remedy at that time, see Chapter 116.

Anadin

Anadin is a well-known brand name for pain relief. The original Anadin, first produced in 1932, is a mixture of aspirin and caffeine but Anadin products containing ibuprofen and paracetamol are now available.

Lemsip

Lemsip is a very well-known British branded cold remedy containing paracetamol and phenylephrine hydrochloride. First produced in 1969, this medicine is still available today. Most well-known is the orginal hot lemon drink but various products are now available under the Lemsip brand.

Depressed

Mum had severe struggles with her mental health, suffering with depression and anxiety, see Chapter 116. Sometimes, she noted specific things that triggered or relieved her feelings of depression. In this case, she noted feeling depressed over her frequent colds.

Christian Aid Collecting

P refers to my older sister Tricia (Patricia) and R to me (Roger). In the evening, we went with mum collecting for Christian Aid, see Chapter 124. This was despite mum’s cold. I also noted doing this collecting. Mum noted doing this in Portersfield Road This is close to where we lived in College Road, see Chapter 102. It is the extension of Jessopp Road from College Road to what was St Peter’s Park Lane Methodist Church.

The collecting we did was part of Christian Aid Week. This advert for that week is from 1977

Senokot

Mum took one Senokot (S) presumably for constipation, see Chapter 116. Senokot is a senna-containing medicine for the treatment of constipation.

A Note on the Weather

I noted that it was quite hot that day although it rained later on. That year was particularly hot and dry, see Chapter 129.

Football

As I frequently did, I noted playing football at school, see Chapter 118.

Some Work

I noted doing “some work” at school, see Chapter 118.. We were in the run-up to external exams and I noted we had completed most of our syllabuses.

Group Practice

While I was at school, I was part of a music group and was trying to learn guitar, see Chapter 118. However, I was never very good and was always on the edges of the group! On this occasion, I noted that there was a group practice after school.

TV and Bed

I noted watching TV before going to bed, see Chapter 122, although I did not note what I watched.
