Notes
Overseas Missions Anniversary
It was Overseas Missions (OM) Anniversary (Ann) at St Peter’s Park Lane Methodist Church. Mum also sometimes referred to this as Overseas Missions Sunday, see Chapter 124. The speaker was Rev Ken Marshall. Mum thought it was very, very good (VVG).
Rev Ken Marshall
Rev Ken Marshall is a retired Methodist Minister, see Chapter 124. In the Yorkshire North and East District Directory 2024/25, he is listed as a supernumerary Minister. He entered the Methodist Ministry in 1964. I have found news items, particularly related to speaking engagements from 1962 to 2001. In 2001, he was described as the superintendent Minister for the Ripon Circuit and in 1996 as the superintendent Minister for the York (North) Circuit. Apparently, he was a missionary in Zambia for eight years.

Boys’ Brigade Parade
Mum noted that there was a Boys’ Brigade parade in Dereham in the afternoon (aft). Alan refers to my younger brother. He was part of Boys’ Brigade and went for this parade, see Chapter 124.

Swimming
R refers to me and A to my younger brother Alan. We went swimming in the morning (am), see Chapter 122. This was something I often did on a Sunday morning. Alan and Liz did occasionally come with me before church as they had the previous week. I noted that Alan was able to go this week because he did not go to church that morning as he was going to the Boys’ Brigade parade in the afternoon. I suspect this was his choice as I think mum would have liked him to do both. Anyway, it seems that she accepted this possibly without comment. I believe we would have gone to St Augustine’s pool.
St Augustine’s
This swimming pool opened in 1961 and was closed in 1997, see Chapter 92. The building was later demolished. For some more great photos of St Augustine’s see here.

Drayton for Tea
Mum, Liz (E for Elizabeth) and I went to grandma’s in Drayton for tea. This was our usual practice on Sunday afternoons, see Chapter 122. Tricia and Alan did not go as Tricia was away on the MAYC weekend and Alan was at the Boys’ Brigade parade in Dereham, see Chapter 124.
Cutting the Lawns and Pruning Bushes
Grandma had large gardens at the front and back of her house. Both had lawns which needed frequent cutting. Increasingly, as grandma and grandad had got older, this had fallen to us to do, see Chapter 126. On this occasion, according to mum’s diary, she cut the lawns and I pruned the bushes. Mum thought the mower was not cutting very well but she got it working.
Back from MAYC Weekend
My older sister Tricia (P for Patricia) got back from the MAYC weekend in London, see Chapter 124. When I wrote my diary, I noted that she was “due back soon“. Mum commented that she was very “off” when she got back. I have no idea what that was about, if anything. It may just have been that Tricia was tired or it is possible that something had annoyed her. Mum wondered about saying something but decided not to. Based on my own experience of her “checking” if I was OK, that was a good decision!
Senokot
Mum took one Senokot (S) presumably for constipation, see Chapter 116. Senokot is a senna-containing medicine for the treatment of constipation.
TV
I noted watching TV (tele) in the evening but did not note what I saw, see Chapter 122.
