Tuesday 11 May 1976

Mum – Mr A away. Not too busy. Worked through lunch & left about 4.15. Finished dress at night. 1S.

Roger – The brief heatwave has gone although it is still not cold. Played football at break and lunch-time & took the wrong books to both French & Chemistry. This evening went to the University to see a German film with Bob, Chris & Ian then watched England beat NI 4-0. I think that the new leader of the Liberal party is Joe Grimond.

Notes

Mum Worked for Mr Ashken and Mr Stephens

During this period, mum worked as part-time medical secretary for the private practice of two surgeons, Mr Ashken and Mr Stephens, see Chapter 121. This practice was based at 41 Newmarket Road. She worked all day on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and half day on Fridays. On this occasion, as it was Tuesday, she worked all day. She noted that Mr Ashken (Mr A) was away and that it was not too busy. She worked through her lunch break so was able to leave early at about 4.15 pm.

Making a Dress

Mum was making a blue, red and white dress, see Chapter 126. She referred to it as princess style. As far as I know, a princess style, or princess line, dress is one made with long panels meaning there is no separation at the waist between the bodice and skirt. She had started making it two days earlier and noted that she finished it at night.

Senokot

Mum took one Senokot (S) presumably for constipation, see Chapter 116. Senokot is a senna-containing medicine for the treatment of constipation.

Heatwave

I noted that what I described as a “brief heatwave” had gone even though it was still not cold. I think that heatwave had been a precursor of things to come as that year was particularly hot and dry, see Chapter 129.

Football

At school, I noted playing football at both break and lunch-time, see Chapter 118.

Wrong Books

I noted that I took the wrong books to both French and chemistry, see Chapter 118 but I did not give any details nor did I explain why/how this happened.

German Film

In the evening, I went to see a German film at the University of East Anglia, see Chapter 120. I noted going with school friends, Bob, probably Robert Bonwell, Christopher Gray and Ian Sherrington. I did not give any details of what we saw.

International Football on TV

When I got back from the UEA, I watched England beat Northern Ireland 4-0. This was a match in the British Home Championship. It was not shown live on TV but there were highlights on BBC1 from 9.55 to 10.55 pm on a programme called “Sportsnight“.

Liberal Party Leader

Following the resignation of Jeremy Thorpe as Liberal Party Leader the previous day, I thought Jo Grimond had become the new leader, see Chapter 129. Joseph Grimond, born in July 1913, was Liberal MP for Orkney and Shetland from 1950 to 1983. He had been Liberal Party Leader from 1956 to 1967. On this occasion, he again took on the leadership on a temporary basis. On leaving the Commons, he became a life peer. He died in October 1993 aged 80.
