Mum – Went to May morning breakfast for OM at 8.15. A went too. Typed & dup all day. R stayed at home to watch FA Cup. Southampton beat Man United 1-0. P went to help Andrew with organ at night. FR rang twice briefly. Very tired at night. 1S.
Roger – Didn’t go to work as I wanted to watch the FA Cup Final. Got up at 9.30 had a relatively lazy morning but did some work spent most of the afternoon and evening watching TV. Southampton bt Manchester United 1-0 in the FA Cup final. Rangers beat Hearts 3-1 in the Scottish Cup final I think and Muhammed Ali is still boxing’s world heavyweight champion after beating Jimmy Young on points.
Notes
Overseas Missions Breakfast
At 8.15 am, mum and Alan (A) went to a May morning breakfast for Overseas Missions (OM) at St Peter’s Park Lane Methodist Church. see Chapter 124. This was held some two weeks before the Overseas Missions Anniversary that year.
Typing and Duplicating
According to mum’s CV, see Chapter 105, she ran a typing and duplicating business from home until 1975. However, she did typing and duplicating after this date, particularly for the church, see Chapter 121. On this occasion, she noted typing and duplicating (dup) all day.
Helping with Organ
P refers to my older sister Tricia (Patricia). She went to help Andrew Wright at church, with the church organ. see Chapter 124. I am not entirely sure what was involved but, from time to time, Tricia did help Andrew with things at church, . see Chapter 124.
Rev Dowson
FR refers to Rev F R Dowson. Frederick Rodham Dowson entered the Methodist ministry in 1936. He was born in Haxby, York on 5 August 1912 and he died in Selsey on 4 September 2011, aged 99. I believe he was superintendent Minister for the Park Lane Circuit from 1968 to 1974. He and mum were close and they spoke and corresponded frequently, see Chapter 114. On this occasion, he rang twice briefly.
Very Tired
Mum noted that she was very tired at night. Mum complained fairly frequently of tiredness and exhaustion at this time, see Chapter 116.
Senokot
Mum took one Senokot (S) presumably for constipation, see Chapter 116. Senokot is a senna-containing medicine for the treatment of constipation.
A Day Off
At that time, I had a Saturday job at The Scientific Anglian bookshop, see Chapter 119. However, I had taken the day off work as I wanted to watch the FA Cup Final.
This allowed me to have a lie-in until 9.30 am and to then have a relatively lazy morning. However, I did note doing some school work, see Chapter 119.
TV
I noted that I spent most of the afternoon and evening watching TV. It is interesting to note that both BBC1 and ITV showed the Cup Final with each having extensive build-up to the game. In ITV’s case, coverage started at 12 noon while “Cup Final Grandstand” started on BBC1 at 11.15.
F A Cup Final
My main focus for the day was watching the FA Cup Final between Manchester United and Southampton, see Chapter 123. At that time, Manchester United were a first division team, finishing third in the league, whereas Southampton only finished sixth in the second division that year.
At the beginning of April 1976, I had noted that the FA Cup Final would be between Southampton and Manchester United as Manchester Utd beat Derby and Southampton beat Crystal Palace both 2-0. In the final itself, Southampton surprisingly beat Manchester United 1-0.
Scottish Cup Final
I noted that the Scottish Cup Final had also been played that day and I thought Rangers had beaten Hearts 3-1, see Chapter 123. I did occasionally note results from Scottish football but my main interest was English football, and Norwich City, in particular.
Muhammad Ali
I noted that Muhammad Ali was still world heavyweight boxing champion having beaten Jimmy Young on points, see Chapter 123. This fight had taken place the previous day but the BBC showed highlights as part of its FA Cup coverage.
