Tuesday 20 April 1976

Mum – V busy at work. Sharon came in & I did some more of her thesis. Roy left at 4am & I didn’t sleep again. V tired at night. FR rang in evening – nice. 1S.

Roger – Hitch-hiked to Domme and Beynac today with Susan. We had 12 lifts and one came very close to crashing. I thought Domme was good but Beyrac was not very impressive especially on the inside. Got back about ½ past 6 (the deadline was 6) and had a barbecue which Mr Kusters had prepared. It was a smashing meal and only cost 10F. Ivy came but left quite early. There was some dancing and it is now 12 o’clock.

Notes

Mum Worked for Mr Ashken and Mr Stephens

During this period, mum worked as part-time medical secretary for the private practice of two surgeons, Mr Ashken and Mr Stephens, see Chapter 121. This practice was based at 41 Newmarket Road. She worked all day on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and half day on Fridays. On this occasion, as it was Tuesday, she worked all day. She noted that it was very busy. Mr Ashken’s daughter Sharon came in. Mum was typing her thesis for her and she did more of this.

Dad Left Early

Roy refers to my father Royle Drew. Although mum and dad had separated in 1973, dad had been visiting over Easter, see Chapter 114. He left at 4am and mum noted that she did not go back to sleep. As a result, she felt very tired at night.

Rev Dowson

FR refers to Rev F R Dowson. Frederick Rodham Dowson entered the Methodist ministry in 1936. He was born in Haxby, York on 5 August 1912 and he died in Selsey on 4 September 2011, aged 99. I believe he was superintendent Minister for the Park Lane circuit from 1968 to 1974. He and mum were close and they spoke and corresponded frequently, see Chapter 114. On this occasion, he rang in the evening. Mum thought this was nice.

This is a still image from a YouTube video posted in 2016. It shows (at 0.42) my mother talking to Rev Dowson at an event to celebrate fifty years of St Peter’s Park Lane which was held in the eighties

Senokot

Mum took one Senokot (S) presumably for constipation, see Chapter 116. Senokot is a senna-containing medicine for the treatment of constipation.

School Camping Trip in France

It was the tenth full day of our school camping trip in France, see Chapter 118.

Hitchhiking to Domme and Beynac

I hitchhiked to Domme and Beynac with Susan. We had 12 lifts. I noted that one came very close to crashing. To be honest, I seemed fairly blasé about this! I liked Domme but thought Beynac was not very impressive especially on the inside. This view is perhaps surprising as Beynac is considered one of the most beautiful villages in the Dordogne! Perhaps what I meant was that the beauty could not be appreciated from within the village.

Mr Kusters’ Barbecue

We got back around 6.30pm just missing the deadline of 6pm! We then had a barbecue which the campsite owner Mr Kusters had prepared. I described this as a smashing meal which only cost 10F. I noted that Ivy came but left quite early. Also, I commented that there had been some dancing and that, at the time I was writing my diary, it was midnight.

This photo, I believe, was taken the following year in 1977.  The couple are Wim and Fien Kusters who started “Le Paradis”. I imagine one of the young boys is Gé who now runs it. I am grateful to Alison Grimes for sharing this photo and for allowing me to include it here.  She is pictured (red circle) as is Sarah Humphries (red square).
