Notes

Work at the Scientific Anglian

R refers to me Roger and mum noted that I went to work. At this point, I had a Saturday job working at the Scientific Anglian, see Chapter 119. I noted that mum gave me a lift to work. At work, Terry Tidd was not in but everyone else was.

Lunch at the Fish and Chip Shop

I had lunch in the fish and chip shop I often went to. This was Grosvenor Fish Bar on the corner of Pottergate and Lower Goat Lane. It is still operating although it has been refurbished and indoor seating is now downstairs while I recall it being upstairs. The website states that it has been in business for 95 years. There is an old photo here which captures the edge of the shop looking up Lower Goat Lane towards City Hall.

I used to have lunch there fairly often when I was working at the Scientific Anglian, see Chapter 119.

Typing

According to mum’s CV, see Chapter 105, she ran a typing and duplicating business from home until 1975. However, she did typing and duplicating after this date, particularly for the church, see Chapter 121. On this occasion, she noted typing etc. in the morning (am).

Decorating the Lounge

Mum had decided to decorate our lounge, see Chapter 126, which was the downstairs room at the front of the house. Tricia (P for Patricia) had done most of the painting so far and, on this occasion, she finished all the painting.

Boys’ Brigade District Weekend

Mum and Alan went to Wymondham College in the afternoon where they spoke to a Boys’ Brigade (BB) District Weekend, see Chapter 124. The topic they spoke on was “As Others See Us” and they spoke from the perspective of a boy in Boys’ Brigade and his parent. Eric Buxton acted as questionmaster. Mum thought it was very good and that they did very well. She thought it had not been too unnerving.

School Camping Trip in France

Mum noted that I (Roger) left at 8pm in the school minibus to France. Mr Cheeseman was in charge. Gary Wood had also gone and seven others, see Chapter 118.

A photo of me standing by the school minibus. I think this was taken a year earlier on a similar trip to France

I was super excited about the trip and presumably that is why I was unable to sleep and was up early. My diary entries confirmed what mum had said and I also noted that Mr Cheeseman, Gary Wood and Robert Bonwell had collected our stuff, that is the things we were taking, that morning. This meant that we only had to get ourselves to school for 8pm.

We drove to Felixstowe and I noted that this had been without hitches. While we were waiting to embark, Gary Wood and I played backgammon. I noted that I lost twice! As I was writing my diary, it was about midnight and the boat had just started. I was in my reclining seat as were a few others from our party although some were still in the bar.

Babysitting

P refers to my older sister Tricia (Patricia). She babysat for the Cookes at night, see Chapter 122.

Senokot

Mum took one Senokot (S) presumably for constipation, see Chapter 116. Senokot is a senna-containing medicine for the treatment of constipation.
