Mum – Work by 8.30. JPS came in for an hour. Then off on holiday. Sharon Ashken came on for 2½ hrs am & 2½ hrs pm for me to type a thesis for her (on the soya bean). Very tired at night. cold still troublesome. A went to school. 1S.
Roger – Played football at lunch-time instead of playing basketball and I don’t know whether there was a match but I didn’t feel very well so I came home straight after school. There was a group practice but I dropped out. This evening watched TV. Patricia is due back tomorrow at 09.00 hrs. In his budget Denis Healey announced a price rise on alcoholic drinks, cigarettes and petrol. The 25% Luxury VAT rate has been halved to 12½%. Certain tax allowances have been increased but many are conditional on the TUC reaching a pay constraint agreement with the Govt.

Mum Worked for Mr Ashken and Mr Stephens
During this period, mum worked as part-time medical secretary for the private practice of two surgeons, Mr Ashken and Mr Stephens, see Chapter 121. This practice was based at 41 Newmarket Road. She worked all day on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and half day on Fridays. On this occasion, as it was Tuesday, she worked all day and got into work for 8.30am. Mr Stephens (JPS) came in for an hour and was then off on holiday.
Mr Ashken’s daughter Sharon came in so that mum could type her thesis for her. They spent five hours on this, half in the morning (am) and half in the afternoon (pm). Mum noted that it was on the soya bean.
Tired and Troublesome Cold
Mum noted that she felt very tired and her cold was still troublesome, see Chapter 116.
Alan Went to School
My younger brother Alan had been unwell. He had had a cold which had triggered his asthma and made him wheezy. Mum had taken him to see the GP and he had been given antibiotics, see Chapter 116. The previous day, mum had discussed him with Dr Rutter as she was concerned he was no better. However, on this occasion, he went to school so I assume he was feeling better or at least no worse.
Senokot
Mum noted taking one Senokot (S) presumably for constipation, see Chapter 116. Senokot is a senna-containing medicine for the treatment of constipation.
Football at School
I noted that I played football at lunch-time instead of playing basketball, see Chapter 118. I am not sure why but it may have had something to do with me not feeling well. This meant I headed straight home after school and did not know whether there was a basketball match or not.
Not Feeling Well
I noted not feeling well but did not say what the problem was. I had had a cold a few days earlier so perhaps I was not yet fully over that, see Chapter 116.
Group Practice
While I was at school, I was part of a music group and was trying to learn guitar, see Chapter 118. However, I was never very good and was always on the edges of the group! On this occasion, I did not go to the group practice after school as I did not feel well.
TV
I noted watching TV in the evening, see Chapter 122, but did not specify what I watched.
Tricia Was Coming Back
Patricia referred to my older sister who I have always called Tricia. She had been away with her school orchestra on a trip to Germany, see Chapter 118. I noted that she was due back at 9am the next day.
Budget
Following James Callaghan’s election as Labour Party leader and Prime Minister, the government set a budget and I noted some details, see Chapter 129. It was set by then Chancellor of the Exchequer Denis Healey. I noted that there was to be a price rise on alcoholic drinks, cigarettes and petrol. The government were also halving the so-called “luxury” VAT rate from 25% to 12½%. I also noted that certain tax allowances had been increased but many were conditional on the TUC reaching a pay constraint agreement with the government.
