Mum – Alan went to school but was very tired when he got home. Had temp of 102.6 at night so I rang Dr Rutter – he said Alan probably had flu & the Ledermycin couldn’t help that but would keep his chest clear. To see a Dr tomorrow if no better. My cold still “thick” and troublesome. Prepared lounge for decorating. Duplicated in aft. Jack Howard brought keys & property stewards books round in evening. 1S.
Roger – School again, played football at lunch-time. This evening went to our final french meeting which last from 7 to 8 and then came home to watch TV. We leave on Saturday & there are 118 hours to go. Callaghan has won the election and is the new Prime Minister.

Alan Remained Unwell
My younger brother Alan had been unwell. He had had a cold which had triggered his asthma and made him wheezy. Mum had taken him to see the GP and he had been given antibiotics, see Chapter 116. On this occasion, mum noted that he went to school. However, he was very tired when he got home and had a temperature of 102.6°F (39.2°C). Mum phoned and spoke to Dr Rutter who said he probably had flu. While the antibiotics would not affect that, they would “keep his chest clear“, that is they would prevent a secondary bacterial chest infection. He said they should see a doctor the next day if no better.
Dr Rutter
Dr Francis C Rutter was one of the GPs in the Mile End Road practice that we used. He worked there from at least 1967 to 1990. For at least some of that period, he was a member of the Norfolk Area Health Authority. Apparently, he retired two years early, in 1990, at the age of 63, because he was unhappy with NHS reforms.
Mum’s Cold
Mum still had a cold which she described as “thick and troublesome“, see Chapter 116.
Decorating
It seems mum was planning to decorate another room, in this case the lounge, see Chapter 126. This was our front room that we used on special occasions and for visitors.
Duplicating
According to mum’s CV, see Chapter 105, she ran a typing and duplicating business from home until 1975. However, she did typing and duplicating after this date, particularly for the church, see Chapter 121. On this occasion, she noted duplicating in the afternoon (aft).
Property Steward
Jack Howard was someone who mum knew from St Peter’s Park Lane Methodist Church. He had been property steward but was moving away so mum was taking on this role, see Chapter 124. On this occasion, he brought round the keys and the property steward books.
Senokot
Mum noted taking one Senokot (S) presumably for constipation, see Chapter 116. Senokot is a senna-containing medicine for the treatment of constipation.
Football at School
I noted that I was at school again and that I played football at lunch-time, see Chapter 118.
French Camping Trip
I was about to go on a school camping trip to France, see Chapter 118. I attended a final meeting about this from 7-8pm. I did not note where the meeting was but, given that it was in the evening rather than after school, I suspect it was at Mr Cheeseman’s home. I recall going there on a few occasions.
I noted that we were going on the coming Saturday which was 118 hours away not that I was counting!
James Callaghan Became Prime Minister
I noted that James Callaghan won the election to be Labour Party leader and so became Prime Minister, see Chapter 129. He won the final vote against Michael Foot by 176 votes to 137.
