Wednesday 31 March 1976

Mum – Bit better – stuffy. Mr A in – with fires on when I got in – very concerned that I felt better. Very busy. P broke up. P left for Germany with school orchestra at 6.30pm. Going Harwich – Hook of Holland. 2S.

Roger – Spent lunch-time playing cards. Patricia left for Germany at ½ past 6. I’ve got a bit of a cold so I’ve gone to bed. Had a meeting at break today at which Mr Cheeseman thanked us for taking part in the Crime Prevention Quiz. An important football match tonight. Norwich v Ipswich but I didn’t go due to my cold but will probably go to see Death Race 2000 tomorrow instead.

Notes

Mum’s Cold

Mum had a cold, see Chapter 116 but was feeling a bit better although she still felt “stuffy“. I also noted that I had a cold so did not go out in the evening but went to bed early.

Mum Worked for Mr Ashken and Mr Stephens

During this period, mum worked as part-time medical secretary for the private practice of two surgeons, Mr Ashken and Mr Stephens, see Chapter 121. This practice was based at 41 Newmarket Road. She worked all day on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and half day on Fridays. On this occasion, Mr Ashken (Mr A) was already in when she got there. He had put the fires on and was very concerned that mum was feeling better. Mum noted that it was very busy and underlined very to emphasise this.

Tricia Went to Germany with the School Orchestra

P refers to my older sister Tricia (Patricia). She had broken up from school. Her holidays were often different from ours as she was at a grant-aided private school and we were all at state schools, see Chapter 118.

At 6..30pm, she left to go to Germany with the High School orchestra, see Chapter 118. Mum noted that they were travelling via Harwich and the Hook of Holland.

Senokot

Mum noted taking two Senokot (S) presumably for constipation, see Chapter 116Senokot is a senna-containing medicine for the treatment of constipation.

Playing Cards

At lunch-time, at school, I noted playing cards, see Chapter 118.

Crime Prevention Quiz

At break time, at school, I went to a meeting where Mr Cheeseman thanked us for taking part in the Crime Prevention Quiz, see Chapter 118.

This was an inter-school quiz and our school entered at least two teams. It appears that these quizzes may have started in 1974 as I found an article  which referred to the fourth Norwich inter-schools’ crime prevention quiz taking place in 1977. Apparently that year, Bowthorpe beat CNS in the final.  This year, one of our teams lost in the semi-final to Thorpe House who went on to win the competition.

News cutting from April 1976. This shows that the team from Thorpe House went on to win the quiz that year. There had been 15 teams from ten schools
I came across this cutting in one of the books on display at the Hewett Academy open day in November 2024. It is from July 1982 and notes that Hewett won the inter-schools crime prevention quiz that year, It was the ninth time the competition had run confirming that it had started in 1974

Norwich v Ipswich

I noted that Norwich played Ipswich that night and I referred to it as an important football match, However, I did not go because I had a cold. Norwich won this game 1-0 with Martin Peters scoring the winning goal, see Chapter 123. That year, both teams were in the First Division with Ipswich finishing sixth and Norwich tenth.

League table at the time of the game between Norwich and Ipswich in March 1976. Ipswich were seventh in Division One and Norwich were 15th
There was a note in the programme that Norwich City player Phil Boyer had played for England against Wales. It turned out to be his only cap. England beat Wales 2-1. Boyer was one of eight England players receiving their first cap in that game which was played to celebrate the centenary of the Football Association of Wales
A police line holds Norwich supporters back to allow Ipswich supporters to leave the stadium. At that time, there were always concerns about violence, particularly at such a derby match. Now such derbies are usually held earlier in the day to avoid clashes between fans who have been drinking all day
Local news article noting that the derby passed off with relatively few incidents although some arrests were made
News report of Norwich’s 1-0 victory at home against Ipswich in March 1976. In a game that Norwich reportedly dominated, Martin Peters scored the only goal, his tenth league goal of the season. The report considered this “revenge” for the game at Portman Road in September 1975 which Norwich lost 2-0. The crowd of over 31,000 was Norwich’s biggest home attendance of that season’s league campaign

Death Race 2000

I noted that I was planning to go to see “Death Race 2000” the next day. This was a 1975 film directed by Paul Bartel and starring David Carradine, Simone Griffeth, Sylvester Stallone, Louisa Montez and Don Steele. There was a remake in 2008. According to an advert, it was on at ABC1.
