Monday 8 March 1976

Mum – Rev Hopper came at 9.15-10.15. Went to Rev Wagstaffe’s funeral. Mr R spoke quite nicely. Went to GTE in aft. Went in city in am – took radio/cassette in for new handle – bought tapestry for E birthday from grandma. FR rang in aft – got flu so 11th off anyway but I’d said No before I knew about flu. 1S.

Roger – I played Bridge at Bridge Club this lunch-time otherwise today was rather boring. I am thinking of going to a UEA German film tomorrow, Chris Gray is going. I had a bath and watched TV. P has gone to a school rehearsal I think and Alan to Boys’ Brigade.

Notes

Work for Rev Hopper

Retired Methodist Minister Rev R W Hopper had approached mum to do some shorthand and typing for him. She agreed that she could do this on Mondays as needed, see Chapter 121. On this occasion, she noted that he came between 9.15 and 10.15 am.

Rev Wagstaffe’s Funeral

Rev Wagstaffe had been found dead on his doorstep a few days earlier, see Chapter 116. Apparently, he had been there from the previous afternoon after having returned from the library. Mum went to his funeral and thought that Rev Ream (Mr R), the senior Minister at St Peter’s Park Lane Methodist Church, spoke quite nicely.

Work for Rev Eddy

GTE refers to Rev G T Eddy who was the Chairman of the Methodist District. Based on her CV, see Chapter 105, mum did some part-time secretarial work for him between 1973 and 1977, see Chapter 121. On this occasion, she went there in the afternoon (aft).

New Handle for the Radio Cassette

Mum took her radio/cassette in to get a new handle. It had been broken when some rolls of wallpaper fell on it, see Chapter 126. This was a relatively new Sony cassette radio that mum had only bought in February of the previous year, see Chapter 125.

Mum had originally bought the cassette radio from Sutton and she had ordered a replacement handle from there. Based on the 1960 and 1967 Kelly’s Directories, they were located at 16-18 Exchange Street and they were described as dealing with pianos, electronic organs, tape recorders, tuning, radio and television. They were still there in the seventies. As of January 2021, that property was occupied by the hair salon Savino & Coombes.

Tapestry for Liz’s Birthday

Mum also bought a tapestry, see Chapter 125. This was a present for my sister Liz’s (E for Elizabeth) birthday from grandma, see Chapter 122. Her birthday was in just over a week’s time on 16 March and she was turning 11.

Rev Dowson

FR refers to Rev F R Dowson. Frederick Rodham Dowson entered the Methodist ministry in 1936. He was born in Haxby, York on 5 August 1912 and he died in Selsey on 4 September 2011, aged 99. I believe he was superintendent Minister for the Park Lane circuit from 1968 to 1974. He and mum were close and they spoke and corresponded frequently, see Chapter 114. On this occasion, he rang in the afternoon to say he had flu, see Chapter 116, so his plans for the 11th were cancelled. Mum noted that she had already said no to this, presumably to meeting up, before she knew he had flu.

This is a still image from a YouTube video posted in 2016. It shows (at 0.42) my mother talking to Rev Dowson at an event to celebrate fifty years of St Peter’s Park Lane which was held in the eighties

Senokot

Mum noted taking one Senokot (S) presumably for constipation, see Chapter 116Senokot is a senna-containing medicine for the treatment of constipation.

Bridge Club

I was at school and played Bridge at Bridge Club at lunch-time, see Chapter 118. Otherwise, I thought the day had been rather boring!

German Film at the UEA

I noted that I was thinking of going to see a German film the next day at UEA. I noted that my friend Chris Gray was going. We did in fact go, see Chapter 120, although I was bored and came home after the interval!

Bath and TV

In the evening, I had a bath and watched TV. I did not specify what I watched, see Chapter 122. I noted that I thought my older sister Tricia (P for Patricia) had gone to a school rehearsal, see Chapter 118, whereas my younger brother Alan had gone to Boys’ Brigade, see Chapter 124.
