Notes

Work for Rev Hopper

Retired Methodist Minister Rev R W Hopper had approached mum to do some shorthand and typing for him. She agreed that she could do this on Mondays as needed, see Chapter 121. On this occasion, she noted that he came and brought lots of work.

National Savings Certificate

Mum had received a tax rebate of £25. She decided to invest this in a National Savings Certificate (Nat Sav Cert), see Chapter 121. These offered a fixed rate of tax-free interest. At that time, it was the 14th issue that was available and this offered an effective annual interest rate of 7.59% per annum over four years.

Glasses

Mum had her eyes tested and was told she needed to wear glasses, see Chapter 116, when she did needlework in the evenings, see Chapter 126. This is slightly odd as it sounds as if it was a new thing but mum had been advised to wear glasses for headaches she was getting in 1961, see Chapter 78

Church Council

Mum attended St Peter Park Lane’s Church Council at night, see Chapter 124. She noted that it was not too bad although this merited an exclamation mark.

Senokot

Mum noted taking one Senokot (S) presumably for constipation, see Chapter 116Senokot is a senna-containing medicine for the treatment of constipation.
