Notes

Work for Rev Eddy

GTE refers to Rev G T Eddy who was the Chairman of the Methodist District. Based on her CV, see Chapter 105, mum did some part-time secretarial work for him between 1973 and 1977, see Chapter 121. On this occasion, she went there in the morning (am).

Typing for Rev Hopper

RWH refers to retired Methodist Minister Rev R W Hopper. He had approached mum to do some shorthand and typing for him. She agreed that she could do this on Mondays as needed, see Chapter 121. On this occasion, she noted typing his things in the afternoon (aft).

St Peter’s Guild

Mum noted that, at night, she went to a meeting of St Peter’s Guild, a fellowship group associated with St Peter’s Park Lane Methodist Church, see Chapter 124. On this occasion, it was held at the house of Gerald and Thelma Cooke. Tom and Margaret Culley and John and Heather Ferguson were also there. The speaker was John Fitzwalter Wright and mum noted it was quite nice.

John Fitzwalter Wright

As far as I can see, this was the only time John Fitzwalter Wright was mentioned in the diaries. Based on information from local newspapers, he was educated at Winchester College and studied politics, philosophy and economics at Christ Church, Oxford. He worked for Price Waterhouse and the Harvard Business School before moving to Norfolk in 1968 to become a Director at Reckitt and Coleman. In 1972, he founded a new merchant bank called Fitzwalter Wright Limited.

However, in 1992, he was convicted of fraud linked to the collapse of the Britannia theme park in Derbyshire in 1985. He was sentenced to six months in prison and disqualified as a director for three years.

He was described as a devout Christian but resigned as a lay reader and from his positions with various Christian organisations at the time of his fraud trial.

Rev Dowson

FR refers to Rev F R Dowson. Frederick Rodham Dowson entered the Methodist ministry in 1936. He was born in Haxby, York on 5 August 1912 and he died in Selsey on 4 September 2011, aged 99. I believe he was superintendent Minister for the Park Lane circuit from 1968 to 1974. He and mum were close and they spoke and corresponded frequently, see Chapter 114. On this occasion, mum rang him at night and she said this was nice. She also posted a letter to him.

This is a still image from a YouTube video posted in 2016. It shows (at 0.42) my mother talking to Rev Dowson at an event to celebrate fifty years of St Peter’s Park Lane which was held in the eighties

Senokot

Mum noted taking one Senokot (S) presumably for constipation, see Chapter 116Senokot is a senna-containing medicine for the treatment of constipation.
