Notes

Duplicating “Retrospect

According to mum’s CV, see Chapter 105, she ran a typing and duplicating business from home until 1975. She also did typing and duplicating for church. On this occasion, she noted duplicating (dup) “Retrospect” i.

Retrospect” was a church magazine that mum had been typing and duplicating since 1966, see Chapter 90. I am not sure exactly what it was but I think it was some kind of church or circuit quarterly newsletter. I recall it because I remember helping mum with it, particularly with collating it, see Chapter 121. Somewhat surprisingly, I did not come across any copies among mum’s papers.

Clothes Shopping

Alan refers to my younger brother. He went with mum into Norwich. She bought him some trousers and a jumper. She also bought some wool to knit a jumper presumably for him, see Chapter 125.

Half Term

R refers to me Roger and A E to my younger siblings Alan and Liz (Elizabeth). Mum noted that we were on our half term break from school. The three of us went to state schools so tended to have similar holidays. My elder sister Tricia went to a private, grant-aided school so tended to have different breaks, see Chapter 118.

Auntie Dolly Went Home

A Dolly refers to Dorothy Rose who we referred to as Auntie Dolly. She was actually grandma’s first cousin. She lived in Bedford and she often visited grandma see Chapter 122. She always came by bus and, usually, one or more of us would take her to the bus station. On this occasion, mum noted thaking her for an early morning bus.

Work and a Party

R refers to me, Roger. I went to work. At that time, I had a Saturday job at The Scientific Anglian bookshop, see Chapter 119. In addition to working on Saturdays, I sometimes worked during the school holidays as on this occasion.

Mum also noted that I went to a party at night. This was at a time before the period for which I have my diaries. Mum simply noted that I went without giving more details, see Chapter 122. She did note, however, probably disapprovingly, the time I came in!

Senokot

Mum noted taking one Senokot (S) presumably for constipation, see Chapter 116Senokot is a senna-containing medicine for the treatment of constipation.

Mr Claxton Fixed the Radiator

Mr Claxton came and fixed the radiator, see Chapter 126. Mum had taken it off for decorating. Andrew Wright had put it back on for her but it was then leaking and he could not fix it. Mum noted that she was to phone Mr Claxton at the beginning of April and he would then come and do the lounge floor and wall. I am not quite sure what he was going to do nor why it needed to be done in April. Mum concluded by noting that Mr Claxton was nice. This merited three exclamation marks.
