Notes

Mum Worked for Mr Ashken and Mr Stephens

During this period, mum worked as part-time medical secretary for the private practice of two surgeons, Mr Ashken and Mr Stephens, see Chapter 121. This practice was based at 41 Newmarket Road. She worked all day on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and half day on Fridays. On this occasion, as it was Wednesday, she worked all day.

Typing for Rev Hopper

Rev H refers to retired Methodist Minister Rev R W Hopper. He had approached mum to do some shorthand and typing for him. She agreed that she could do this on Mondays as needed, see Chapter 121. On this occasion, he had brought her some notes he had written out for her to type. Mum finished typing these in the afternoon (aft).

Young Wives’ Country Dance

Young Wives (YW) refers to a women’s group that mum belonged to at St Peter’s Park Lane Methodist Church, see Chapter 124. Mum went to their country dance at night and thought it was very good (VG). P refers to my older sister Tricia (Patricia) and E to my younger sister Liz (Elizabeth). Both went with mum to the country dance.

Dreadful Cold

Alan refers to my younger brother. He had a dreadful cold, see Chapter 116. So, at night, he stayed in by himself.

School Play

R refers to me Roger. I went to my school’s play, see Chapter 118. I did not give any more detail but, based on a photo from the local press, it seems that the play was “The Loyal Traitor“. Oddly, that cutting said the play was being performed on Thursday and Friday and I noted seeing it on Wednesday. Perhaps there was a dress rehearsal to pupils within the school?

News cutting from local press concerning the Hewett’s school play in February 1976

I did find a review of the play from the local press. This explained that the play had been written by former pupil Ian Paul and focused on Kett’s rebellion of 1542. The review was very positive praising the “fluent” script and the “fine” cast. Two cast members, Christopher Ingamells and Christine Pomfret are singled out for particular praise.

Antidepressants

Mum had had severe struggles with her mental health, suffering with depression and anxiety, see Chapter 116. Mum was on antidepressants. She took one tablet of amitriptyline (Tryptizol, T) at night.

Senokot

Mum noted taking one Senokot (S) presumably for constipation. Senokot is a senna-containing medicine for the treatment of constipation.
