Notes

Church Services

Mum went to the service at St Peter’s Park Lane Methodist Church in the morning (am) and evening, see Chapter 124. In the evening, the Young Wives (YW) led the service with mum doing the first prayer. There were about 50 people at the service which was held in the church’s Epworth (Ep) Room.

Car Troubles

In the afternoon, mum noted that the car wouldn’t start, see Chapter 127. At this point, mum had a Simca, which she and dad had bought in February 1972, see Chapter 110.

My siblings, Tricia (P for Patricia), Alan (A), Liz (E for Elizabeth) and I (R for Roger) pushed the car to get it started. Mum then stopped the car and called the AA. I recall doing something like this because the AA would not come out if the car was within a certain distance of your home! The man from the AA said that a cell had gone in the battery. This is slightly odd as the car had had similar problems before and the battery had been checked as part of its MOT only a few days earlier.

I assume the man from the AA got the car going again. Mum then went to grandma’s to tell her about the problem. I assume we had been due to go there for tea but we did not stay as mum presumably could not turn the car engine off. I am not sure, however, why mum didn’t just phone grandma to tell her of the problem. Anyway, mum and Tricia then took the car to the garage and left it there with a note. I presume they then walked home.

Rev Dowson

FR refers to Rev F R Dowson. Frederick Rodham Dowson entered the Methodist ministry in 1936. He was born in Haxby, York on 5 August 1912 and he died in Selsey on 4 September 2011, aged 99. I believe he was superintendent Minister for the Park Lane circuit from 1968 to 1974. He and mum were close and they spoke and corresponded frequently, see Chapter 114. On this occasion, he rang to check about their plans to meet up the next day.

This is a still image from a YouTube video posted in 2016. It shows (at 0.42) my mother talking to Rev Dowson at an event to celebrate fifty years of St Peter’s Park Lane which was held in the eighties

Antidepressants

Mum had had severe struggles with her mental health, suffering with depression and anxiety, see Chapter 116. She was on antidepressants. She took one tablet of amitryptilline (Tryptizol, T) at night.

Senokot

Mum noted taking one Senokot (S) presumably for constipation. Senokot is a senna-containing medicine for the treatment of constipation.
