Monday 29 December 1975

Got up early & did washing. Went to St Barnabas for Comm Service – nice – able to talk a bit to Maurice Bird but not in private. Roy went out all day because my mum, A Dolly & A Amy came for tea. Cleaned & plucked pheasants then saw some slides. 1L. Got a slight sore throat.

Notes

Washing

Mum noted that she got up early and did the washing. She often washed on a Monday although she did not always note it in her diary, see Chapter 126.

Communion Service at St Barnabas

Mum went to a communion (comm) service at St Barnabas. She thought it was nice. She spoke to the Minister, Rev Maurice Bird but she noted that this was not in private.

St Barnabas Counselling Centre

The junior Minister at St Peter’s Park Lane Methodist Church, Rev Ken Elworthy, had suggested that mum consider attending St Barnabas Counselling Centre for counselling, see Chapter 114. He had taken her there for a communion service two weeks earlier and and she had spoken with Maurice Bird then.

Established as a centre for Christian healing in 1974, St Barnabas still provides non-denominational, multi-faith counselling. However, according to their website, they are no longer accepting new clients.

The St Barnabas Counselling Centre in Norwich in 2019. I think it was very sensible of Rev Elworthy to suggest referral here. But, as far as I know, mum never took up this offer © Evelyn Simak and licensed for reuse under this Creative Commons Licence

Maurice Bird

Maurice Pidding Bird was Anglican vicar of St Barnabas in Norwich from at least 1971 until 1978. He was born in 1919 gaining a BA from Lincoln College Oxford in 1940 and an MA in 1944. He completed training for the Anglican ministry at Cuddesdon College in 1940. Then, he was ordained as a deacon in 1942.

Dad Went Out All Day

Roy refers to my father Royle Drew, see Chapter 114. He was staying with us over Christmas, see Chapter 122, but he went out all day because grandma, Auntie Dolly (A Dolly) and Auntie Amy (A Amy) were coming to ours for tea. Both aunts were staying with grandma. Auntie Dolly, Dorothy Rose, was actually grandma’s first cousin. Auntie Amy, Amy Wilson, was a close friend of grandma’s from Mansfield.

These photos were taken at grandma’s over the Christmas period in 1975. People in both photos are Caroline Douglas, grandma, Auntie Amy, me, Liz, Alan and Auntie Dolly. Mum appears in the photo on the left and Tricia in the photo on the right

Pheasants

The pheasants were a Christmas gift from Mr Stephens, see Chapter 122, one of the surgeons for whom mum worked. He gave her a brace of pheasants for Christmas each year that she worked for him. Mum noted that she cleaned and plucked them.

Slides

Mum noted seeing some slides, , see Chapter 122. She did not note who showed them or what they were slides of.

Antidepressants

During this period, mum had had severe struggles with her mental health, suffering with depression and anxiety, see Chapter 116. She was on antidepressants. On this occasion, she took one tablet of long-acting amitryptilline (Lentizol, L).

Sore Throat

Mum noted that she had a slight sore throat. Such ailments were common during this period, see Chapter 116, but this one does not seem to have developed into anything.
