Notes

A Riding Hat

E refers to my younger sister Liz (Elizabeth). She was into riding at this time. Mum bought her a riding hat from Wilkinsons.

Wilkinsons

According to the 1967 Kelly’s Directory, Wilkinson was based at 1 Guildhall Hill and sold leather goods. This is where Scarlet Norwich are now based on the corner of Lower Goat Lane. I came across an obituary notice for Harry Wilkinson on 21 August 1936. He was described as the head of this business.

Typing and Duplicating

According to mum’s CV, see Chapter 105, she ran a typing and duplicating business from home until 1975, see Chapter 121. She also did typing and duplicating for church. On this occasion, she noted that she typed and duplicated all day.

Disco

R refers to me (Roger). Mum noted that I went to a disco at night, see Chapter 122. She did not say anything more about it such as where it was. Around that time, I recall going to discos at school and also at the Teens youth club I attended at Chantry Hall. I am not sure where this particular disco was but the latter seems more likely.

Lights at Church

P refers to my older sister Tricia (Patricia). She went to help Andrew Wright put up lights at church ready for the next day, see Chapter 124.

Auntie Dolly Came

A Dolly refers to Dorothy Rose who we referred to as Auntie Dolly. She was actually grandma’s first cousin. She lived in Bedford and she usually spent Christmas with grandma and grandad, see Chapter 122. This would have been the first year she came after grandad had died. She always came by bus and, on this occasion, mum and my younger brother Alan (A) picked her up.

These photos were taken at grandma’s over the Christmas period in 1975. People in both photos are Caroline Douglas, grandma, Auntie Amy, me, Liz, Alan and Auntie Dolly. Mum appears in the photo on the left and Tricia in the photo on the right

Rev Dowson

FR refers to Rev F R Dowson. Frederick Rodham Dowson entered the Methodist ministry in 1936. He was born in Haxby, York on 5 August 1912 and he died in Selsey on 4 September 2011, aged 99. I believe he was superintendent Minister for the Park Lane circuit from 1968 to 1974. He and mum were close and they spoke and corresponded frequently, see Chapter 114. On this occasion, he phoned in the afternoon (aft) and mum rang back. She noted this was nice and this merited an exclamation mark.

This is a still image from a YouTube video posted in 2016. It shows (at 0.42) my mother talking to Rev Dowson at an event to celebrate fifty years of St Peter’s Park Lane which was held in the eighties

Antidepressants

During this period, mum had had severe struggles with her mental health, suffering with depression and anxiety, see Chapter 116. She was on antidepressants. On this occasion, she took one tablet of amitryptilline (Tryptizol, T).
