Notes
Dad Was Staying for the Weekend
Roy refers to my father Royle Drew. He was staying for the weekend. He was sleeping in Liz’s room as she was away in Drayton. Mum noted that dad asked her to go for a meal with him but she also commented that he was out most of the time which she was pleased about.
Mum noted that she could not understand dad. This incident shows how confusing their relationship was to them and me, and probably my other siblings. Despite the underlying conflict and animosity, there were times when they seemed to get on OK, even well. At those times, I thought that perhaps some form of reconciliation was possible. Sadly, these times were few and far between, see Chapter 114.
Problems With Car Battery
Mum noted that she had problems with the car, the battery was flat, see Chapter 127. At this point, she had a Simca, which she and dad had bought in February 1972, see Chapter 110.
Unable to Go Shopping
As a result of the car battery being flat, mum was unable to do the supermarket shopping at Sainsburys, see Chapter 125.
Car Washing
Alan refers to my younger brother and BB refers to Boys’ Brigade. On this occasion, he was involved in a Boys’ Brigade car washing morning. I presume this was a fundraising event in which they offered to wash people’s cars, see Chapter 124.
Typing and Duplicating
According to mum’s CV, see Chapter 105, she ran a typing and duplicating business from home until 1975. She also did typing and duplicating for church. On this occasion, she noted that she typed and duplicated (dup) all day.
Ken Elworthy
Ken E refers to Rev Ken Elworthy who was the junior Minister at St Peter’s Park Lane Methodist Church at this time, see Chapter 124. Mum phoned him for a chat.
Antidepressants
During this period, mum had had severe struggles with her mental health, suffering with depression and anxiety, see Chapter 116. She was on antidepressants. On this occasion, she took one tablet of long-acting amitryptilline (Lentizol, L).
