Monday 27 October 1975

Grandad – I was determined to get up but felt so ill. Mr Pearce came & helped me out of bathroom. Dr Leeming came at 4 o’clock. He wanted to put me back to bed. E & D helped me at 8 o’clock.

Mum – Washed then tidied R & A bedrooms. Then went in city with Patricia. P left for Bacton about 3pm in car. Went to Catering Committee at night at Janet Howard’s.

Notes

Grandma Was Keeping Grandad’s Diary

Earlier in October, the handwriting had changed meaning, I think, that grandad was not well enough to keep his own diary and grandma did this for him, see Chapter 113. She referred to grandad in the first person as “I/me” and to herself in the third person as E.

Grandad Was Not Very Well

It seems that grandad was quite unwell having had a stroke a few days earlier, see Chapter 116. Grandma noted that he was determined to get up and, despite feeling very ill, seems to have managed a few hours out of bed. One of the nurses, Mr Pearce, helped him out of the bathroom. One of the Drayton GPs, Dr Leeming, saw him about 4pm and advised that he go back to bed. Grandma (E) and Auntie Dolly (D) helped him back to bed at 8pm.

Wash Day

Mondays were a day for doing washing for both mum and grandma, see Chapter 126. Although this was not always noted in the diaries, mum did note it on this occasion.

Tidying Bedrooms

Mum also tidied my (R) bedroom and Alan’s (A), see Chapter 126. I think she took the opportunity of us being away on holiday in Bacton with dad.

In the City

Mum noted thst she went into the city with my older sister Tricia (Patricia), presumably for some form of shopping, see Chapter 125.

Holiday With Dad in Bacton

Tricia left about 3pm in the car, see Chapter 127, to join dad, Alan, Liz and I where we were on holiday staying in a chalet owned by dad’s boss, see Chapter 122. I recall that holiday fondly. It was my first beach holiday in the autumn/winter and dad was much more relaxed about what we were allowed to do on the beach than mum would ever have been, e.g. walking into the sea with our shoes on!

This photo was taken from Bacton Beach looking towards Mundesley in 2021. Understandably, most of the photos I have found of Bacton Beach were taken on warm, sunny days with a calm sea. That is not how I remember that holiday! Also, since I was there much of Bacton Beach was lost to coastal erosion although an extensive sandscaping project in 2018 means that the beach after that time looks more how I remember it © David Pashley and licensed for reuse under this Creative Commons Licence

Catering Committee

Mum went to a Catering Committee meeting at night at Janet Howard’s house. I assume this was the catering committee for St Peter’s Park Lane Methodist Church, see Chapter 124.
