Went to Nottm Albert Hall saw Life of Christ or INRI.

Notes

Trip to Nottingham

Grandad went to the Albert Hall in Nottingham (Nottm) where he saw the “Life of Christ” or “INRI“, see index of films seen. I imagine he went with grandma, Ethel May Cecilia Cirket, as they were “courting” at that time. They married in 1930, see Chapter 16.

The Albert Hall

The Albert Hall in Nottingham started life as a Temperance Hall. Building work started in 1873 and it opened in 1876. It served as a concert hall and venue for political rallies but, in 1902, it became a Wesleyan mission. In 1906, it was damaged by fire and rebuilt, reopening in 1909. It continued as a Methodist mission and concert hall until 1982 and, in 1987, it was purchased by Nottingham City Council. It was refurbished and linked to the adjacent Playhouse, see Chapter 54.

Life of Christ“/”INRI

This refers to a 1923 German silent religious epic film dealing with the events leading up to the cricifixion of Jesus, see index of films seen. It was directed by Robert Wiene and starred Gregori Chmara, Henny Porten and Asta Nielsen. It ran at the Albert Hall from 19-24 October 1925. The film can be seen on YouTube.
