Grandad – Ethel went to DLM, 26 were there. Sheila rang us about 16.30 to say that Patricia had passed her driving test.
Mum – went to Eliz harvest festival in the AM, then to OM coffee morning at church. P passed her driving test at 12:15, but she didn’t tell me until she got home from school at ¼ to 5. I was convinved she’s failed again & was cross with her – due to disappointment again – but pleased in the end. saw Dr W in am – suggests I go to bed later so sat up till nearly 11 watching TV & knitting Eliz jumper (black, yellow & red). Did not take Heminevrin – slept 2-6 & off & on before & after that.

Grandma Went to Church Women’s Meeting
Ethel refers to my grandmother Ethel May Cecilia Parkin. She attended a women’s meeting at Drayton Methodist Church, see Chapter 124. Grandad referred to this as DLM for Drayton Ladies’ Meeting. He noted that there were 26 there which I think was very good.
Tricia Passed Her Driving Test
Sheila refers to my mother Sheila May Drew née Parkin. She phoned grandma and grandad about 4.30pm to tell them that my older sister Tricia (Patricia) had passed her driving test. This was at the second attempt, see Chapter 127.
Mum noted that Tricia (P) had passed her driving test at 12.15 but did not tell mum until she got home from school which mum said was 4.45pm. Clearly, the times in the diaries cannot both be right. I confess I am not sure what was so terrible about Tricia telling mum the outcome when she next saw her. Presumably, mum expected Tricia to phone and that may not have been posible or easy from school.
However, mum convinced herself that the reason Tricia had not phoned was that she had failed again. She ended up being cross with Tricia. She said this was due to disappointment but I am not sure what there was to be disappointed about given that Tricia had passed! It seems mum was cross because Tricia didn’t phone her but wiated to tell her until she got home. I am not sure that mum thought it was odd that she was cross with Tricia when she had passed her driving test! I think most parents would have been pleased straightaway with the news especially as she had previously failed once. Mum did acknowledge that she was pleased in the end.
Liz’s Harvest Festival
Eliz refers to my younger sister Liz (Elizabeth). Mum went to her harvest festival presumably at school, see Chapter 118.
Church Coffee Morning
Mum then went to an Overseas Missions’ coffee morning at St Peter’s Park Lane Methodist Church, see Chapter 124.
Dr Welch
Mum saw her GP, Dr Welch, presumably about the difficulties she was having sleeping, see Chapter 116. He advised her to try going to bed later which she did. She stayed up until nearly 11pm watching TV and knitting a black, yellow and red jumper for Liz, see Chapter 126. She also did not take any clomethiazole (Heminevrin). Mum noted that she slept from 2-6am and on and off before and after that.
