Notes

Mrs Lefever

Mrs Lefever was a friend of grandma and grandad’s probably through Drayton Methodist Church. She gave lifts to grandma for some church events, see Chapter 124, and visited grandad when he was sick, see Chapter 116.

I am not sure if Mrs Lefever brought blackberries from her garden or was perhaps sharing those she had collected from the wild. Blackberrying was something different family members did at different times, see Chapters 81 and 92. It is also possible that she had got them from paid pick your own. However, while it was possible to pick your own blackberries, it was more common to pick strawberries and raspberries, see Chapter 122. Although Mrs Lefever is mentioned a few times in the diaries, this was the only time she was recorded as bringing fruit although she did bring them lavender in July 1974, see Chapter 106.

Typing and Duplicating

According to mum’s CV, see Chapter 105, she ran a typing and duplicating business from home until 1975. She also did typing and duplicating for church. On this occasion, she noted typing and duplicating all day.

Rev Dowson

FR refers to Rev F R Dowson. Frederick Rodham Dowson entered the Methodist ministry in 1936. He was born in Haxby, York on 5 August 1912 and he died in Selsey on 4 September 2011, aged 99. I believe he was superintendent Minister for the Park Lane circuit from 1968 to 1974. He and mum were close and they spoke and corresponded frequently, see Chapter 114. On this occasion, mum phoned him in the afternoon (aft).

This is a still image from a YouTube video posted in 2016. It shows (at 0.42) my mother talking to Rev Dowson at an event to celebrate fifty years of St Peter’s Park Lane which was held in the eighties

Liz Went Riding

E refers to my younger sister Liz (Elizabeth). She was into horse riding at this age, see Chapter 122, and went each week for riding lessons in Drayton. On this occasion, mum just noted that she went riding in the afternoon (aft).

This image of Liz riding was taken on holiday in Colwyn Bay

Tricia Went to a Party

P refers to my older sister Tricia (Patricia). Mum noted that she went to a party, see Chapter 122.
