Grandad – Ethel went to DLM. I went in my WC to Irene’s. Ethel pushed & fetched me back.
Mum – Saw Dr W in am. To continue Lent & Hem (perhaps try Lent every other night). Gave me Piriton for my heat spots. Made app for 4 weeks as “something to hang on to”. Took car to garage for electrical tests – everything OK they say. Roger came home. Roy rang in evening – gave him my earnings last year – he’s now filling in his tax forms. FR rang to say he’d got my letter.

Women’s Meeting at Drayton Methodist Church
Ethel refers to my grandmother Ethel May Cecilia Parkin. She attended the weekly women’s meeting at Drayton Methodist Church, see Chapter 124. Grandad referred to this as DLM for Drayton Ladies’ Meeting.
To Irene’s in the Wheelchair
WC in this context refers to wheelchair, see Chapter 116. Grandad went in this to Irene Bell’s. She lived next-door-but-one to grandma and grandad at 162 Drayton High Road. Grandma pushed grandad there and brought him back,
Dr Welch
Dr W refers to Dr Welch, mum’s GP, see Chapter 116. Mum saw him in the morning (am) and he advised her to continue taking clomethiazole (Hem; Heminevrin) and long-acting amitryptilline (Lent; Lentizol). He suggested perhaps taking the amitryptilline on alternate nights. He also gave mum some antihistamines, chlorphenamine (Piriton), for heat rash. She made a follow-up appointment (app) for four weeks time. Mum liked to have an appointment booked as it gave her “something to hang on to“.
The Car
Mum had been having problems with the car battery for some time, see Chapter 127. When she had been away on holiday in Colwyn Bay, the car would not start. She had a garage look at it and they told her it was holding its charge. The previous day, the car had not started so Auntie Dolly had had to take a taxi to catch her bus to Bedford from the bus station. Mum had recharged the battery.
At this point, mum had a Simca which she and dad had got in February 1972, see Chapter 110. On this day, she took it to a garage and they ran some electrical tests. They told her everything was OK.
Roger Came Home
Roger refers to me. I came home. I had been staying with my dad while mum had been away on holiday, see Chapter 122.
Dad Phoned
Roy refers to my father Royle Drew. He phoned. Mum told him her earnings from the previous year and he was then completing his tax forms, see Chapter 114.
Rev Dowson
FR refers to Rev F R Dowson. Frederick Rodham Dowson entered the Methodist ministry in 1936. He was born in Haxby, York on 5 August 1912 and he died in Selsey on 4 September 2011, aged 99. I believe he was superintendent Minister for the Park Lane circuit from 1968 to 1974. He and mum were close and they spoke and corresponded frequently, see Chapter 114. On this occasion, Rev Dowson rang to say he had got mum’s letter.
