Ethel refers to my grandmother Ethel May Cecilia Cirket. Grandma and grandad were “courting” at this point but it would be some five years before they married, see Chapter 16. Roy and Olive were grandad’s nephew and niece, Roy and Olive Evans. It seems they had a joint birthday party, see Chapter 21. This was very close to Roy’s birthday as he had been born on 7 August. He would have been turning four as he was born in 1921. However, I am not sure why the family celebrated Olive’s birthday in August as she had been born on 29 December. Perhaps they did not want to have a party for her so close to Christmas. At this time, she would have been seven as she had been born in 1917.
