Notes

Drayton Methodist Church

Ethel refers to my grandmother Ethel May Cecilia Parkin. DMC refers to Drayton Methodist Church and grandma went there for morning service, see Chapter 124. Usually, grandma went to Drayton Methodist Church twice on a Sunday, in the morning and in the afternoon. However, there were not afternoon services in August. She did go to Mile Cross Methodist Church (MCMC) in the evening for Rev Hayman’s leaveing service.

Rev Hayman’s Final Service

Mr Newsome was someone that grandma knew through church. As on this occasion, he sometimes gave her lifts to church events, see Chapter 124. Miss Cooke was a good friend of grandma’s through the church, particularly the church’s women’s group to which they both belonged. On this occasion, they went to Mile Cross Methodist Church (MCMC) in the evening for Rev Hayman’s final service. He had been Methodist Minister based at Mile Cross Methodist Church since the late sixties. He was moving to Colchester.

Plas-y-Coed

Mum and my two younger siblings were on holiday at Plas-y-Coed, a Methodist/Christian Guild Holidays property in Colwyn Bay, see Chapter 122. We had all been there the previous year, see Chapter 106. However, this year, I did not go nor did my older sister Tricia (Patricia). Plas-y-Coed was the Methodist/Christian Guild hotel in Colwyn Bay. It was demolished in 2014 and replaced with homes.

Morning Service

Nant y Glyn refers to the Methodist Church in Colwyn Bay. Mum noted that they went there in the morning (am) and that they had a good service. Rev Cheshire spoke on the text “If God is for us who can be against us“, see Chapter 124.

Nant-y-Glyn

Nant-y-Glyn was a Methodist Church on the corner of Abergele Road and Nant-y-Glyn Road in the east of Colwyn Bay. The church opened as a Wesleyan chapel in June 1905. However, in 2018, it had closed and was put up for sale. I believe that at this time, family friend Rev Derrick Leach was the Minister there, see Chapter 124.

Rev Cheshire

While I am not exactly sure who this is referring to, there was a Rev Laurence Scadeng Cheshire who entered the Wesleyan Ministry in 1922. He died in 1981 in Rhos-on-Sea which is very close to Colwyn Bay, see Chapter 124.

If God is for Us…

This text is a quotation from the book of Romans Chapter 8 verse 31.

Park

Mum noted that they went to the park in the afternoon (aft), see Chapter 122. While I don’t know which park they went to, it may have been Eirias Park as this is close to where Plas y Coed was located.

Hymn Singing

Mum noted that there was a good hymn sing at night, see Chapter 122. While this was the sort of thing mum enjoyed doing on holiday, it was this kind of activity that put me off Methodist/Christian Guild holidays. It was definitely not the sort of thing I wanted to spend my holidays doing!
