Notes

Comments on Weather

The weather had been very hot. Both mum and grandad noted that it was cooler.

Grandad Walked With His Stick

Grandad’s health had been poor following an operation to try to relieve urinary obstruction on 2 July 1975, see Chapter 116. This was not very successful and he was left with a permanent catheter. He had been bedbound for a period but had gradually improved and, on this day, he managed to walk with his stick.

Grandma Went to Drayton Ladies’ Meeting (DLM)

Ethel refers to my grandmother Ethel May Cecilia Parkin. DLM refers to Drayton Ladies’ Meeting which was what grandad called the weekly women’s meeting that grandma attended at Drayton Methodist Church, see Chapter 124.

“Clarrie” Hodson aka Clarence Hodgson

Clarence and Ellen Hodgson were friends of grandma’s and grandad’s through Drayton Methodist Church, see Chapter 124. While initially I thought Clarrie referred to a woman, I am now pretty sure that this is a reference to Clarence Hodgson and that he came to keep grandad company while grandma and Ellen Hodgson were attending the women’s meeting.

Car Servicing and Engine Tuning

Mum noted that she took the car for what she described as a holiday service and engine tuning, see Chapter 127. At this point, she had the Simca that she and dad had bought in February 1972, see Chapter 110.

Hair Permed

Mum noted that she had her hair permed in the afternoon (aft).

Asthma

Alan refers to my younger brother. Mum noted that he was a bit wheezy. While he and I were both affected by asthma, my recollection is that his was worse than mine, see Chapter 116.

Depressed

During this period, mum had severe struggles with her mental health, suffering with depression and anxiety, see Chapter 116. She noted feeling depressed at night.
