Grandad – Stayed in bed until 7 o’clock but could not stand the TV on so went back to bed. Had Dr Sladden. Mrs H brought strawberries.
Mum – Alan & I went & picked strawberries with Janet Howard. Picked over 18lbs in hour. I had 7 lbs & Janet took rest for Ruby Ford & herself. Went in aft to Thetford with Mr R, Leslie Dye & Janet to Dis Stewardship meeting. Quite good. Made appt to see Dr W on Monday – not sleeping at all well.

Change in Handwriting
There had been a change in handwriting at the end of June. Based on this, it seems likely that this, and subsequent entries, were made by grandma even though this is not stated explicitly. If indeed, the entry was made by grandma, she writes with grandad in the first person although the “I” is implied, e.g. in “stayed in bed“.
Mostly in Bed
Grandad had come home from hospital a few days earlier having been admitted a few days before that with symptoms related to a further urinary obstruction, see Chapter 116. He had had surgery to stretch the bladder neck. This was carried out by consultant urologist, Mr Ashken. However, the operation had not been very successful in terms of relieving his urinary obstruction. So, he had been discharged home with the catheter in place. Mr Ashken had explained to mum that the catheter would be in place for three weeks initially. On this occasion, he stayed in bed until 7pm but came back to bed as he “could not stand the TV“. I am not sure if it was a specific programme he did not like or just the general noise of the TV. I am not sure why they did not just switch the TV off!
TV Programmes
According to a TV Guide, the film “The Last Command“was on BBC1 from 6.25pm to 8.10pm. A programme called “Westminster” was on BBC2 from 6,55pm and this was followed by the news and sport. Anglia were also showing a film from 6.20pm to 8.00pm. This was called “Kenner” and was followed by “Sale of the Century“, a programme that grandad usually liked.
Dr Sladden
Dr David Sladden was one of the GPs in Drayton, see Chapter 116. He joined the practice in 1956 and died in 2001 aged 96. He visited grandad.
Mrs Hinchley
Grandad’s diary noted that Mrs H brought strawberries. I assume this was Mrs Hinchley as Mr Hinchley had brought strawberries two days earlier. I am not entirely sure who they were but probably someone grandma and grandad knew through Drayton Methodist Church. They had previously brought them strawberries, see Chapter 106.
Picking Strawberries
Mum, my younger brother Alan and Janet Howard, a friend of mum’s from church, see Chapter 124, went and picked strawberries. They collected 18 pounds in an hour. Mum had seven pounds. Janet had the remainder which she took for herself and Ruby Ford, another friend from church.
District Stewardship Meeting
In the afternoon (aft), mum went to Thetford for a District (Dis) Stewardship meeting, see Chapter 124. She thought this was quite good. She went with the senior Minister from St Peter’s Park Lane Methodist Church, Rev Ream (Mr R), Leslie Dye and Janet Howard with whom she had earlier been picking strawberries.
Dr Welch
Mum made an appointment (appt) to see her GP Dr Welch (Dr W) on Monday as she was not sleeping at all well, see Chapter 116.
