Sunday 29 June 1975

Grandad – E went to chapel in the morning. We had dinner then I was taken ill. Sent for Gale. He ordered me to hospital.

Mum – Got to Drayton about 10 to 3 & mum was just about to ring Dr Gale – dad got blockage again. Dr G came & sent him to Casualty. They put him on Ward 7 to try & sort him out. P & A went to Diss with Spotsoc to do Holy Moses.

Notes

Change in Handwriting

There had been a change in handwriting a few days earlier. Based on this, it seems likely that this, and subsequent entries, were made by grandma even though this is not stated explicitly. If indeed, the entry was made by grandma, she refers to herself in the third person as E (Ethel) and grandad in the first person as “I“.

Morning Chapel

Grandma went to the morning service at Drayon Methodist Church, see Chapter 124. She usually attended afternoon servic too but did not on this occasion because grandad was taken ill.

Hospital

Grandad was taken ill in the afternoon. Mum explained that this related to a further urinary obstruction. Grandma called their GP, Dr Gale, who came and arranged for grandad to go to hospital. He was admitted to Ward 7 via Casualty, see Chapter 116.

Spotsoc and “Holy Moses

Spotsoc refers to the young people of St Peter’s Park Lane Methodist Church, see Chapter 124. From memory, it stood for St Peter’s Over Twelve Society. All my siblings were involved in it, I believe. However, although I did go to one or two of their activities over the years, I was never really involved.

Holy Moses” is a musical of about 45 minutes in length that tells the story of Moses in a way that is aimed at children. Various performances of it are available on YouTube including this one. I also found news articles concerning relatively local school performances of the musical in King’s Lynn in 1977 and Laxfield in 1988.

Spotsoc had performed it before at St Peter’s Park Lane Methodist Church. On this occasion, they went to Diss, possibly to the Methodist Church, to perform it. The Methodist Church in Diss has a website with a good history section. This explains that the original chapel was built in 1833 and closed in 1961. A new church was built almost adjacent to it in 1964.
