Notes

Change in Handwriting

There had been a change in handwriting the previous day. Based on this, it seems likely that this, and subsequent entries, were made by grandma even though this is not stated explicitly. If indeed, the entry was made by grandma, she refers to herself in the third person as E (Ethel).

The Royal Norfolk Show

E refers to my grandmother Ethel. P refers to my older sister Tricia (Patricia). Both went to the Royal Norfolk Show, see Chapter 122 and they went round together. As a child, I recall going to the Royal Norfolk Show pretty regularly including in the late sixties, see Chapter 92, and early seventies, see Chapter 106.

R Walker

Grandma got a lift to the Royal Norfolk Show with Miss R Walker, someone who both mum and grandma knew through church, see Chapter 124.

Mum Worked All Day

The previous day, mum had started a new job as medical secretary for the private practice of two surgeons, Mr Ashken and Mr Stephens, see Chapter 121. This practice was based at 41 Newmarket Road. Mum worked there 2½ days a week, all day on Tuesday and Wednesday and Friday afternoon. As this was a Wednesday, she worked there all day.

Musical Evening at Liz’s School

At night, mum went to a musical evening at the school of my younger sister Liz (Elizabeth). Mum refers to her as Eliz, although as far as I know, no-one ever called her that. I think that, at this point, Liz, who would have been 10, would have still been at the Avenues primary school, see Chapter 118. Mum noted that the event was “not too bad“.

Pam Ludlow

On her way to the school musical evening, mum met one of her friends from church, see Chapter 124, Pam Ludlow. While the dfiary entry might mean that Pam was also going to the musical evening, it could also mean that mum met her but they did not necessarily then go on to the event together.

St Peter’s Park Lane Methodist Church

St Peter’s is a reference to St Peter’s Park Lane Methodist Church which mum was attending at this time, see Chapter 124. Mr R refers to the senior Minister at that time, Rev Ream. He had phoned mum and they discussed the church. I am not sure exactly why Rev Ream phone or what was discussed about the church but mum was clearly negative about it at the end and wondered if it was worth struggling on.

Rev Dowson

FR refers to Rev F R Dowson. Frederick Rodham Dowson entered the Methodist ministry in 1936. He was born in Haxby, York on 5 August 1912 and he died in Selsey on 4 September 2011, aged 99. I believe he was superintendent Minister for the Park Lane circuit from 1968 to 1974. He and mum were close and they spoke and corresponded frequently, see Chapter 114. On this occasion, he phoned mum to tell her that he was going on holiday the next day to Wales.
