Notes
Grandma Went to a Women’s Meeting
Ethel refers to my grandmother Ethel May Cecilia Parkin. DLM refers to Drayton Ladies’ Meeting which is what grandad called the women’s meeting that grandma attended at Drayton Methodist Church, see Chapter 124.
Grandad Had a Poor Day
I am sure the reference to a poor day refers to grandad’s health, see Chapter 116, and not to grandma’s experience of the women’s meeting!
Mum Saw Dr Welch
Dr W refers to Dr Welch, mum’s GP. She saw him in the morning. He advised her to reduce the antidepressant doxepin (Sinequan) to one per day in another week. He advised her to go or ring for a repeat prescription in two weeks. However, when mum got home, she phoned and made an appointment for two weeks as she felt she needed “something definite to hang on to“, see Chapter 116.
St Peter’s Guild at Pam Ludlow’s
Guild refers to St Peter’s Guild which was a house-based fellowship group associated with St Peter’s Park Lane Methodist Church. Meetings were held at different houses in rotation, see Chapter 124. On this occasion, the meeting was held at Pam Ludlow’s. Mum noted that it was very nice.
Extremely Lonely
Mum noted feeling extremely lonely when she got home from the Guild meeting. Mum had suffered with loneliness from the time she and dad split up, see Chapter 114. Sometimes, it seemed that this loneliness was worse during or after social events.
Concern Over Weight
Mum appears to have been concerned over her weight as she felt no longer able to wear summer dresses, see Chapter 116. She resolved to cut down on biscuits.
