Notes
Grandma Did Some Gardening
Ethel refers to my grandmother Ethel May Cecilia Parkin. Grandma and grandad had large gardens at the front and back of their house. Grandma did “a bit of gardening“, see Chapter 126.
Mum Went to Coeliac Society AGM in London
Between 1975 and 1979, mum regularly attended the Coeliac Society AGMs in London, see Chapter 116. On this occasion, the speaker was Dr Peter Baker from Bristol. Mum considered him excellent.
Dr Peter Baker
I am not entirely sure who this was. I did find a doctor by this name who was senior house officer at Frenchay Hospital at this time. However, I think he would have been too junior to be a national authority on the topic unless he was speaking about his own personal experience of the disease.
Visiting Dad
My siblings, Tricia (P for Patricia), Alan (A) and Liz (E for Elizabeth) went with mum and they took the opportunity to visit dad (Roy) who was living in Newbury Park at that time, see Chapter 114.
I Went to Work
R refers to me. I did not go with them as I went to work. I was working at the Sceientific Anglian bookshop at this time, see Chapter 119. This was one issue with having a Saturday job, namely that I sometimes missed out on things I would have liked to have done.
Tricia Was Learning to Drive
Tricia had just turned 17 and was learning to drive, see Chapter 127. She took the opportunity to practice by driving all the way to London. Mum then left the car at dad’s and went to the Coeliac Society meeting using the underground.
Sorting Out the House
The issue about the house which needed sorting out was that it was in mum and dad’s joint names and mum wanted it transferred to her name only. Mum thought dad had agreed to this but the issue dragged on and was only finally resolved the following year, see Chapter 117. Apparently, dad had said that he would sort out the house “when he got round to it“, see Chapter 114, a phrase that I am sure would have irritated mum!
Brian Christopher Hare
Brian Christopher Hare was a lawyer who was a partner at Daynes Chittock and Back. I assume he had been mum and dad’s lawyer. According to Joe Mason, Daynes Chittock and Back became Daynes Keefe and then part of Evershed before leaving Norwich some time before 1981. I presume this refers to what is now Eversheds Sutherland. They appear to have 11 branches in the UK including in Cambridge and Ipswich.
