Notes
Comments on Weather
Grandad started his diary entry with a comment on the weather noting that it was another hot day. Mum described it as nice and hot but noted that her legs and arms caught the sun.
Grandma Worked in the Back Garden
Ethel refers to my grandmother Ethel May Cecilia Parkin. She and grandad had large gardens at the front and back of their house. On this occasion, grandma did some work in the back garden, see Chapter 126.
Mum Worked for Dr Day
Based on her CV, see Chapter 105, mum worked as part-time receptionist for Drs Downes and Day from 1974 to 1975, see Chapter 121. On this occasion, she worked in the morning (am).
Alan Went With Boys’ Brigade to Bassingbourn
Alan refers to my younger brother and BB to Boys’ Brigade, see Chapter 124. He went with Boys’ Brigade to Bassingbourn for the day. Although mum noted that Bassingbourn was in Hertfordshire, it appears to be in Cambridgeshire albeit close to the Hertfordshire border. I am not sure why Boys’ Brigade went there.
Tricia Went on a Junior Church Outing
P refers to my older sister Tricia (Patricia). She went on a Junior Church (JC) outing, see Chapter 124 for primary (Prim) and beginners (Beg). Mum did not specify where they went.
Liz Went Riding
E refers to my younger sister Liz (E). She used to ride every week at this time, see Chapter 122. and, on this occasion, went riding in the afternoon (aft).
Mum Bought Me Sunglasses for My Birthday
Roger refers to me. Mum bought me sunglasses, see Chapter 125, for my birthday which had been on 4 June, see Chapter 122. These cost £3.95.
Mum Did Some Sewing Outside
In the afternoon (aft), because the weather was nice, mum did some sewing outside, see Chapter 126.
Tricia Went to Marion Frostick’s Party
At night, my older sister Tricia (Patricia) went to Marion Frostick’s party, see Chapter 122. I assume Marion was a school friend of Tricia’s. Although mum spelled her name Frosdick, I think it was Frostick. Her father, Raymond C Frostick, was Lord Mayor of Norwich in 1976-77.
