We refers to my grandmother, Ethel Cirket, and my grandfather, Gordon Parkin. This was five years before they married, see Chapter 16. PM refers to Primitive Methodist. “Sermons” was how grandad referred to anniversaries, see Chapter 17.
Initially, I was not completely sure if this was the chapel or Sunday School anniversary. However, in the “Stray Notes” in the Stapleford and Sandiacre News of 9 May 1925, a brief article noted that the Sunday School anniversary was being held the next Sunday and crowded congregations were expected. Mr E Hutchinson had been training the children.
The following week, the Stapleford and Sandiacre News contained a report of the anniversary. The church was full half an hour ahead of the start of the evening service. The preacher ws Rev F Winterburn who spoke on the development of character. Solos were given by Misses L Rice and Betty Webster. Mr H F Garnett played the organ. A total of £80 3s 11d was raised through the collection.
