Grandma Was Keeping Grandad’s Diary at This Point
Grandad had not been very well, see Chapter 116. I think this means that grandma filled in his diary for him although he may have made the odd entry. The evidence that grandma was mostly keeping his diary is the change of handwriting, some of the topics discussed and also that, sometimes, she referred to him as Gordon and not as “I“. One of the topics that grandma covered but grandad rarely, if ever, discussed was doing washing. I think grandma did it on this day (Tuesday) because she had been at a funeral the previous day which was her usual wash day, see Chapter 126.
Grandma completed grandad’s diary quite a lot when he was sick, see Chapter 113. However, she was not always consistent. Sometimes, she referred to herself in the first person and grandad in the third person while, at other times, it was vice versa. On this occasion, grandma is referred to in the third person as E (Ethel).
Comment on the Weather
Grandad’s diary included a comment that the weather was very windy.
Grandma Went to the Post Office (P O) After Doing “Her” Washing
E refers to my grandmother Ethel May Cecilia Parkin. She went to the Post Office (P O) but grandad does not say why. The most likely reason was to collect their pension, see Chapter 121.
The diary notes that she did “her” washing first. I assume it was their washing but grandma considered it hers in accordance with then norms.
Mum Took the Car In
At this point, mum had a Simca, see Chapter 127. It had given problems the previous day and they had had to call the AA on their way to the funeral. Although they had carried out a temporary fix, the problem was not fully resolved. So, mum took it to a garage in the morning (am).
Mum Was Up and Down All Day
During this period, mum had severe struggles with her mental health, suffering with depression and anxiety, see Chapter 116. She noted she was up and down all day. I assume this refers to her mood. She was also very tired. She often complained of being tired and this seemed to relate to her poor mental health.
