Grandad – Dr Leeman came to see me afternoon. Ethel did a bit in the garden. Had a bonfire.

Mum – Finished bathroom off. It does look nice. Only used 3 rolls wallpaper but very little matching to do, hardly any waste. Very warm.

Notes

Dr Leeming Came to See Grandad

I believe Dr Leeman is a reference to Dr Leeming who was one of the GPs in the Drayton practice at that time, see Chapter 116.

Grandma Worked in the Garden

Ethel refers to my grandmother Ethel May Cecilia Parkin. Grandma and grandad had large gardens at the front and back of their house. On this occasion, grandad noted that she did “a bit” in the garden including having a bonfire, see Chapter 126. Grandma and grandad’s preferred way of disposing of garden rubbish was to burn it, see Chapter 109.

The Trouble with Bonfires

While you do occasionally encounter bonfires these days, they are less common than they were. Broadly, they are discouraged because of the harm they cause and because of the alternatives of composting and recycling. I don’t recall that we have ever had a bonfire here. We do pay £50 per year for a brown bin which allows collection of garden waste.

Mum Finished Decorating the Bathroom

Mum noted that she finished decorating, see Chapter 126, our bathroom at 192 College Road, see Chapter 117. She had started this a week earlier. She had had to change the wallpaper the previous day but seemed happy with the replacement she had bought. Apparently, she only used three of the four rolls she bought. As she was explained, this was because there was not much pattern matching to do and this reduced waste.

Comment on the Weather

Mum commented ont he weather, that it was very warm.
