Notes

Grandma and Grandad Went to Nottingham Castle….

We refers to grandma, Ethel Cirket, and grandad, Gordon Parkin. This was some five years before they married, see Chapter 16. On this Saturday, they went to visit Nottingham Castle, a 17th century mansion built on the site of a much earlier Norman castle.

… And to the Theatre Royal

They also went to the Theatre Royal in Nottingham to see the 1923 play by Sutton Vane “Outward Bound“. In the play, a group of seven passengers meet in the lounge of an ocean liner at sea. They realise that they have no idea why they are there, or where they are bound. Each of them eventually discovers that they are dead. They have to face judgment from an Examiner, who will determine whether they are to go to Heaven or Hell!

An article in the Nottingham Journal of 28 March 1925 noted that this strange play was coming to the Theatre Royal next week. It was to be presented by Mr Oswald Marshall himself supported by Angela Mackay, Alice Mansfield, Janet Hodson, F J Randall, R Gosse, C Hodges, J McFarlane and J Findlay.
