Notes

Grandma Took Grandad’s Income Tax Return to Norwich

Ethel refers to my grandmother Ethel May Cecilia Parkin. She submitted grandad’s income tax return in person in Norwich, see Chapter 121. At the beginning of each year, grandad still completed a tax return. Grandma used to take it in person to the Inland Revenue. The earliest she did this was January and the latest was April. Each year, grandad appeared to receive a tax refund about one week after submitting the return. He did not always note the amount but he did from 1971 to 1973 and it rose from £107.20 to £121.18, see Chapter 104. While in Norwich, grandma also paid their electricity bill in person.

Mum Met Auntie Dolly at the Bus Station

Sheila refers to my mother Sheila May Drew née Parkin. Dolly/Auntie Dolly refers to Dorothy Rose who was my grandmother’s first cousin. Grandma’s father (Charles Cirket) and Auntie Dolly’s mother (Lois Rose née Cirket) were siblings. We knew her as Auntie Dolly although she was actually my first cousin twice removed! She visited grandma and grandad often coming by bus from where she lived in Bedford to Norwich bus station, see Chapter 122.

Tricia Went on A Youth Hostelling Holiday with School Friends

Patricia refers to my older sister Tricia. YHA stands for Youth Hostel Association and YH for youth hostel. Both Tricia and I did youth hostelling holidays with friends in the late seventies, see Chapter 122. In this case, Tricia’s friends were Laura Holman, Margaret East and Helen Jones. They had booked hostels for all nights except the first but they were hoping to get into Bakewell.

Postcard of youth hostel in Bakewell. It was purpose-built as a youth hostel in the sixties
However, it no longer operates as a youth hostel but is an up-market hotel called Sleep Lodge. Jo and I stayed there in August 2023

Mum Was Back at Dr Day’s

Based on her CV, see Chapter 105, mum worked as part-time receptionist for Drs Downes and Day, see Chapter 121. She noted that it was nice to be back at Dr Day’s.
