Notes
Mr Larkins Finished the Decorating
Mr Larkins finished the decorating. Grandma and grandad’s house had two bedrooms, see Chapter 117. Mr Larkins was decorating them both. He had started the work on 10 March.
Grandad noted that he paid him £25 for the work plus £8.40 for paint. He also supplied him with a quart (two pint) tin of paint that he had in his cabin, see Chapter 85.
Grandma Went to Norwich and Bought Shoes
Ethel refers to my grandmother Ethel May Cecilia Parkin. Grandad noted that she went into Norwich and bought a pair of shoes for £8.50, see Chapter 125.
Grandma Also Attended a Women’s Meeting
While in Norwich, grandma also attended a women’s meeting. Grandad referred to this as being in Princess Street but he was referring to Princes Street which was the location for a United Reformed Church. This is where these meetings were held, see Chapter 124.
This church was built in the 19th century as a Congregational Church and, in 1972, became a United Reformed Church. A decision was taken to close it in 2020 and it was for sale in April 2021 with the expectation that it would be converted for residential use. However, in September 2023, a proposal was submitted to convert it to a live music venue, see Chapter 90.
The Weather Was Much Improved
Grandad quite often commented on the weather. On this occasion, he noted it was much improved and that it was calm with no rain.
Mum Felt “Muzzy“
While the word is not very clear, it appears to be muzzy. I think this is referring to how she was feeling. She had seen her GP, Dr Welch, the previous day and he had started her on a tricyclic antidepressant, doxepin (Sinequan), see Chapter 116. Presumably, the feelings of muzziness related to those. It seems mum thought that as she did not take the lunch-time dose. That meant she only took two tablets rather than the three prescribed.
Pam Ludlow Came to Choir Practice
The choir mum was part of was based at St Peter’s Park Lane Methodist Church. Pam Ludlow was a friend of mum’s from church. It seems that Pam did not regularly attend choir although she did on this occasion, see Chapter 124.
