Notes

Grandma Went to Drayton Ladies’ Meeting (DLM)

Ethel refers to my grandmother Ethel May Cecilia Parkin. DLM stands for Drayton Ladies’ Meeting which is what grandad called the weekly women’s meeting that grandma attended at Drayton Methodist Church, see Chapter 124.

The Weather Remained “Wrough” and Cold

Grandad quite often commented on the weather. I am not sure why he spelled rough with a “w” but he did so pretty consistently. Presumably, it was very cold and this merited both capitals and underlining!

Mum Felt Very Depressed

Mum noted that she felt “very depressed” in the morning (a.m.). I am not sure if there was a particular trigger for this. She had a long history of struggling with depression, see Chapter 116.

Mum saw her GP Dr Welch (Dr W). She had been suffering from urinary symptoms but he concluded that there was nothing physical causing these and that the underlying cause was “tension“. He prescribed her Sinequan which is the brand name for the tricyclic antidepressant Doxepin. She was told to take 25mg three times per day and to go back in two weeks.

Mum Bought a Basket for Our Cat

Candy refers to our cat, see Chapter 122, Mum bought her a basket, see Chapter 125.

Our cat Candy in the late seventies or early eighties

Mum Also Bought Clothes for Us

Roger refers to me. Mum bought me new jeans and pyjamas. Alan refers to my younger brother. Mum bought him hiking boots. P refers to my older sister Tricia (Patricia). Tricia went with mum to buy an anorak, see Chapter 125.

Mum Went to a Circuit Meeting

Mum went to a circuit meeting at night. Methdist churches are organised into circuits. So, presumably this was a meeting of representatives of many churches within the same circuit. Mum went with the Reams. Mr Ream was the senior Minister at St Peter’s Park Lane at that time. She came back with Ken Elworthy who was then the other Minister at Park Lane, see Chapter 124. I assume that the meeting did not get through all the business that it should have. Hence, mum said the meeting adjourned at 10pm rather than it finished at that time.
