Grandad – Ethel had a ½ dozen or so ladies to discuss what they are going to do in next August. Arthur came during the afternoon to keep me company. Mr Larkins came to do more decorating till 13.00.
Mum – Roy here in evening. I recorded some of The Gondoliers. 1 Trypt at night some w symptoms during day. Moved wardrobe & dressing table round in my bedroom in am. Wrote a note in my duplicating tin, because money is continually being taken, asking for it to be returned.

Grandma and Women from the Methodist Women’s Group Planned What They would Do in August
Ethel refers to my grandmother Ethel May Cecilia Parkin. She was part of a women’s group which met weekly at Drayton Methodist Church. Officially, they did not have meetings in August but they often met informally in each other’s homes. This meeting was to plan those meetings presumably, see Chapter 124.
Arthur Elsegood Came to Keep Grandad Company
Arthur refers to Arthur Elsegood who was grandad’s friend. He came to keep grandad company, see Chapter 122, presumably while grandma and the women were meeting. I suspect Arthur’s wife Rose might have been one of the half a dozen women or so.
Mr Larkins Continued Decorating Their Bedrooms
Grandma and grandad’s house had two bedrooms, see Chapter 117. It seems both were being decorated by Mr Larkins. He had started the previous day. I am not sure who he was. He is mentioned a few times in the diaries but only in relation to this job.
Dad Was There in the Evening
Roy refers to my father Royle Drew, see Chapter 114. He had arrived unexpectedly the previous day and was there that evening.
Mum Recorded Some of “The Gondoliers“
Mum had recently bougth a new cassette recorder, see Chapter 125, so I assume this is what she used for that recording, see Chapter 128. “The Gondoliers” is one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s operettas.
Mum Took One Tryptizol at night (Trypt)
Mum sometimes noted taking Tryptizol or Lentizol, which are both forms of amitryptilline. On this day, she noted that she took one Tryptizol (Trypt) at night. This was because she noted some withdrawal (w) symptoms during the day. I am not sure if she was meant to be taking them regularly or as required, see Chapter 116.
Mum Moved the Furniture Around in Her Bedroom
Mum noted moving a wardrobe abd dressing table in her bedroom, see Chapter 126. She does not say why she did so. I guess she just felt like it.
Mum Thought Money Was Missing
According to her CV, see Chapter 105, mum ran her own typing/duplicating business from home between 1965 and 1975. Presumably, she charged for this and it seems she kept money in a tin. It also seems that money was missing from the tin. I guess the implication is that one of us, or dad, was taking it. However, I don’t know if this was the case or if perhaps mum was mistaken. I guess leaving a note in the tin made some sense but I don’t know what the outcome was. I also don’t know why mum didn’t just get a lockable tin especially as she thought money was continually being taken! Based on my own recollections, I am pretty sure I did not take it. I certainly have no memory of doing so.
In November 1979, there was a similar incident where mum thought some of her stamps were missing. It turned out, based on her diary, that this was indeed the case and someone who had been doing building work for her had taken them, see Chapter 114.
