Notes

Grandma Went to Drayton Ladies’ Meeting (DLM)

Ethel refers to my grandmother Ethel May Cecilia Parkin. She went to Drayton Ladies’ Meeting (DLM) which was a weekly women’s meeting held at Drayton Methodist Church, see Chapter 124.

Grandma Went to a Home Missions Meeting at Mile Cross Methodist Church

After tea, grandma went to another church meeting. This time, it was a home missions meeting and it was held at Mile Cross Methodist Church, see Chapter 124.

Grandma and Grandad Hung Their Front Gates

Grandma had been painting the front gates over the last couple of days. She had finished the previous day and grandad noted that they hung the gates back in their place, see Chapter 126. I recall these gates. They were made of quite fancy wrought iron work. At one point, they were white but I also recall them being black at some point.

Mum Had Her Hair Done

Mum noted that she had her hair set in the afternoon (aft).

St Peter’s Guild Met at Ours

St Peter’s Guild referred to a fellowship meeting held for members of St Peter’s Park Lane Methodist Church. Meetings were held at different people’s houses in rotation, see Chapter 124. . On this occasion, they met at ours.

People who attended included Tom and Margaret Culley, Gerald and Thelma Cooke, John and Heather Ferguson, Avril, Pam Ludlow, Ann Burton, Rev Ken Elworthy and Jill and Brian Stock.

Avril

I am not entirely sure who Avril was but, based on mum’s diary, she was part of Guild meetings in 1975. Mum noted that she was getting married on 6 December 1975 and she does not appear to have attended Guild meetings after that. The only Avril I could find who got married in that quarter in or around Norwich was Avril M Butler. She married Edward L Povey. However, I don’t know for sure it was her.

Ann Burton

As far as I can see, this was the only time mum mentioned Ann Burton in her diary.

Jill and Brian Stock

This was the first time the Stocks were mentioned in mum’s diary. This makes sense as mum noted they were new. They were mentioned a number of times in relation to St Peter’s Guild until July 1976.

Mum Was Lonely After the Meeting

Mum often felt intensely lonely, see Chapter 114, particularly when she had met with other people, especially when they seemed to her to be mostly couples.
