Notes

Arthur Elsegood Came to Try a Tape He Had Recorded

Arthur refers to grandad’s friend Arthur Elsegood, It seems he came to try a tape he had recorded, see Chapter 128. I am not exactly sure what this was or why he had to come to grandad to “try” a tape if he had recorded it!.

Mum Went to Work in the Afternoon

Based on her CV, see Chapter 105, mum worked as part-time receptionist for Drs Downes and Day, see Chapter 121. I assume that was this work she attended in the afternoon.

Rev Dowson

FR refers to Rev F R Dowson. Frederick Rodham Dowson entered the Methodist ministry in 1936. He was born in Haxby, York on 5 August 1912 and he died in Selsey on 4 September 2011, aged 99. I believe he was superintendent Minister for the Park Lane circuit from 1968 to 1974. He and mum were close and they spoke and corresponded frequently, see Chapter 114. On this occasion, mum saw him in at night. She described it as a “very lovely time“.

This is a still image from a YouTube video posted in 2016. It shows (at 0.42) my mother talking to Rev Dowson at an event to celebrate fifty years of St Peter’s Park Lane which was held in the eighties

Mum Did the Church Notices on A4 Rather than Quarto

I assume the notices mum referred to were the notices for St Peter’s Park Lane Methodist Church, see Chapter 124.

In the 1970s, the “A” metric system for paper was adopted meaning that the paper sizes used before that, particularly foolscap (8″ x 13″) and quarto (8″ x 10″) were superseded. The Park Lane notices were one very local example of this change!

Mum Took One Tryptizol at Night

Mum sometimes noted taking Tryptizol or Lentizol, which are both forms of amitryptilline, at night. On this day, she took one Tryptizol. I am not sure if she was meant to be taking them regularly or as required, see Chapter 116.
