Mum – Ken came & dictated a report on UEA chaplain’s work. Went to coffee am at the Howards. Then to Nancy Papworth’s for lunch! Roger found he couldn’t go on the Rouen exchange, only girls, but Mr Cheeseman will take the boys camping in France after Easter – cost £45.50 not £20.25. Roy said yes – so why should I pay!! Posted letter to FR.

Grandma Went to Drayton Ladies’ Meeting (DLM)
Ethel refers to my grandmother Ethel May Cecilia Parkin. DLM refers to Drayton Ladies’ Meeting which was a weekly women’s meeting held at Drayton Methodist Church, see Chapter 124.
Ken Elworthy Dictated a Report on Chaplaincy Work at UEA
Ken refers to Ken Elworthy who was one of the Ministers at Park Lane Methodist Church. He had a particular responsibility for students at the University of East Anglia (UEA), see Chapter 124. Presumably, he dictated this report to mum so she could type it up for him.
Coffee Morning at Jack and Janet Howard’s
Mum attended a coffee morning (a.m.) at the Howards. This refers to Jack and Janet Howard who were friends of mum’s from St Peter’s Park Lane, see Chapter 124. They are mentioned fairly frequently in her diaries in 1975 and 1976. In February 1976, mum noted that Jack Howard had told her that they were moving to Felixstowe. Mum took over from him as property steward when they moved away.
Mum Had Lunch at Nancy Papworth’s
Nancy Papworth was anothe rfriend of mum’s from St Peter’s Park Lane Methodist Church, see Chapter 124. She is mentioned relatively often in mum’s diary between 1975 and 1979 along with her husband Frank. Hers is a name I recognise. I am not sure why lunch with her merited an exclamation mark!
I Discovered I Could Not Go on the Rouen Exchange But Could Go Camping Instead
Roger refers to me. It seems that I had been planning to go on a Rouen exchange with school but it had been decided I could not go as they were only taking girls. Mr Cheeseman, my French teacher, had decided that he would take a group of boys camping in France instead, see Chapter 118.
Mum’s Main Concern Was the Additional Cost
It appears that mum’s main concern was the additional cost. Based on her diary, it seems that it was to cost more than double what the exchange would have cost. Roy refers to my father Royle Drew. Mum noted that she thought dad should pay as he had said I could go, see Chapter 114!
Rev Dowson
FR refers to Rev F R Dowson. Frederick Rodham Dowson entered the Methodist ministry in 1936. He was born in Haxby, York on 5 August 1912 and he died in Selsey on 4 September 2011, aged 99. I believe he was superintendent Minister for the Park Lane circuit from 1968 to 1974. He and mum were close and they spoke and corresponded frequently, see Chapter 114. On this occasion, mum noted posting a letter to him.
