Grandad – Elizabeth came to go horse riding as last week. Ethel went with Wilfred and his wife to see Mrs Davis in the home in Dereham.
Mum – E went to Drayton & riding. Laura & Helen came in am to plan their YHA holiday. Alan went to ABC(2) in aft by himself. Rang FR just before lunch.

Liz Went Horse Riding
Elizabeth refers to my sister Liz. Mum refers to her as E. She had started horse riding in Drayton the previous week and she went again. I had forgotten but Liz took riding quite seriously in the period following this, see Chapter 122.
Visiting Mrs Davis in Dereham
Ethel refers to my grandmother Ethel May Cecilia Parkin. I am not entirely sure who Wilfred was but he is mentioned again in March 1975 when he and grandma went to visit Mrs Davis in Dereham again.
Rosa Davis was a friend of grandma’s through the women’s meeting they attended at Drayton Methodist Church. She had lived near the church on Drayton High Road but she moved to Ecking Grange, a care home, in Dereham in August 1974, see Chapter 100.
Tricia Was Planning a Youth Hostelling Holiday
Mum had earlier noted that I was planning a youth hostelling holiday with two school friends and it appears Tricia was doing the same, see Chapter 122. Her two school friends were Laura Holman and Helen Jones. YHA stands for the Youth Hostel Association.
Alan Went to the Cinema
Alan refers to my brother. He went to the cinema, to the ABC2. Mum did not note what he saw. However, I found an advert which noted that the film in question was “Airport 1975” starring Charlton Heston.
ABC
This cinema on Prince of Wales Road opened as the Regent in 1923, It was renamed ABC in 1961. It was divided into three cinemas in 1973. It was taken over by Cannon Cinemas in 1986. All cinemas closed in the early 2000s and the Mercy Nightclub opened in 2003, see Chapter 90.
Rev Dowson
FR refers to Rev F R Dowson. Frederick Rodham Dowson entered the Methodist ministry in 1936. He was born in Haxby, York on 5 August 1912 and he died in Selsey on 4 September 2011, aged 99. I believe he was superintendent Minister for the Park Lane circuit from 1968 to 1974. He and mum were close and they spoke and corresponded frequently, see Chapter 114.
